Paediatrics
 Induction – 2 days at start of rotation
 Ward rounds
 Lots of learning opportunity – consultant teaching, Registrar teaching
 Initial assessment of patient in Child assessment unit
 Management of ward patients
 Venepuncture and iv access
 Capillary blood sampling
 Liaison with external teams
 Teaching medical students
 A week of neonates for exposure
 Resuscitation scenario training weekly with ED department
 Monthly - Perinatal meeting and Clinical governance rolling half day session
 Weekly - psychosocial meetings.
 Opportunities for community child health experience - including child
protection training to level 3
Lister Hospital – Bluebell Ward, Children’s Day Service and Children’s Assessment
Unit
OPD attachments if organized by F1
Dr K Chawla
 Participation in daily ward handover rounds - consultant led 0830 – 0900
 Patient assessment, ward work
 Discharge patients safely
 Completion of discharge proformas
 Review of patient management against local guidelines
 Completing referral letters
 Responsibility for prolonged jaundice clinics
 Presenting to Paediatric team
 Manage the Radiology meeting
 Audit within department
 No routine out-of-hours commitment
Mon – Fri:
Handover – daily consultant led 0830 – 0900
Admissions clerking / CAU 0830 – 1630
Ward round and admin
Radiology meeting: 3 out of 4 weeks.
Rotate between Inpatient ward and Acute assessment unit
