North Central Thames Foundation School (NCTFS) Individual Placement Description - East and North Herts NHS Trust Placement The department The type of work to expect and learning opportunities F2 Paediatrics & Neonatal medicine Children’s Services Induction – 2 days at start of rotation Acute admissions, ward-based, neonatal unit including attending delivery, 1st on-calls (SHO rota) and outpatient clinic experience Formal weekly teaching programme: 5 x sessions per week Audit projects highly encouraged Clerking and ward work Venesection, venepuncture, iv access Capillary blood sampling Lots of learning opportunity – consultant teaching, registrar teaching Resuscitation scenario training weekly with ED department Opportunities for community child health experience – including child protection training to level 3 Location Lister Hospital: Acute Paeds and Neonatal Unit Supervisor(s) Any substantive Cons Main duties of the Ward based work – supervision by senior trainees and Consultants placement Participation in daily ward handover rounds – consultant led 8.30 – 9am Admission of at risk patient (e.g. suspected sepsis); Initial assessment of patients; ward work Discharge patients safely including newborn discharge check Completion of discharge proformas Review of patient management against local guidelines Completing referral letters Presenting to paediatric team Audit within department Typical working Rotation through Children’s Service: pattern in this 4-month rotation: 2 months each – general paediatrics and neonatal placement Neonatal duty shifts: Long days (0830 – 2100) Nights (2030 – 0915) Postnatal, SCBU, clinic and other clinical day shifts (0830 – 1630) General Paeds Duty shifts: Long days (0830 – 2100) Late (1400 – 2200) Nights (2030 – 0915) Ambulatory Care, Clinic, Day Unit and other clinical shifts (0830 – 1630) On call requirements: Yes – Full shift East and North Herts NHS Trust Employer information It is important to note that this description is a typical example of your placement and may be subject to change.
