A Translational Research Programme in Multiple Myeloma

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full time fixed term position as a
Postdoctoral Researcher / Scientist within the Discipline of Medicine, based at the National Centre
for Biomedical Sciences (NCBES) at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is
funded by the Health Research Board and is available from December, 2012 for an initial period of
1 year with possibility of extension.
This post is an integral part of the development of a new translational research programme in
multiple myeloma funded by the Health Research Board (HRB) following a recent HRB Clinician
Scientist Award to Prof. Michael O’Dwyer.
Job Description: The successful candidate will set up a lab dedicated to translational research in
multiple myeloma. He/she will be the Programme Manager for the grant and will be expected to
co-ordinate the different strands of the research program, as well as having substantial
involvement in bench research.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should have a track record in a research and development environment and
strong translational experience, ideally in cancer research, is essential. Applicants must have a
Ph.D. in the biomedical sciences. The ideal candidate would have experience in a broad range of
basic translational research techniques (e.g. cell culture, flow cytometry, immunoblotting, PCR,
RNA silencing, gene transfection) as evidenced by a publication record. Experience in techniques
to evaluate cell trafficking would also be desirable. Candidates should have excellent
communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated and passionate about cancer
research; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills.
Ideally, candidates should have experience in the coordination and management of research
budgets and should be capable of independent research and capable of supervising other lab
members and PhD students.
Salary: €40,086 p.a (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply)
