Research Assistant – NCBES School of Medicine Ref. No: NUIG 110-12 Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a Research Assistant with the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science (NCBES) at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is funded by the Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute and is available from January 2013. The NCBES is an interdisciplinary centre of research excellence. NCBES brings together scientists, engineers, information technologists and clinicians in a collaborative, translational approach to research. Among the major research programmes at the NCBES, multidisciplinary research clusters are working to understand the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for the initiation and progression of cancer. The Centre has a strong translational and clinical research programme with the objective of translating research discoveries into improved therapeutics and diagnostics. Job Description: A research assistant position for six months, which may be extended, subject to review, will be available starting in January 2013. The successful candidate will carryout a wide range of assays to evaluate the novel mechanisms that regulate the DNA damage pathway in response to environmental toxins. The successful applicant will develop, execute and optimise these various in vitro assays. Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have a track record in a research and development environment and strong Cell and Molecular Biology experience is essential. Applicants must have an Upper Class Bachelor’s Degree in the Life sciences. The ideal candidate would also have experience in PCR, cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, and generation of stable cell lines. Candidates should have excellent communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated and passionate about developing new concepts; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills. Publications in peer-reviewed journals would be advantageous. Salary: €27,927-€35,214 per annum pro rata for this shorter contract period (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply) Start date: Position is available from January 2013.
