The department

Foundation 2 – Geriatric Medicine and Psychiatry
(Old Age Psychiatry)
The department of elderly medicine consists of 5 consultants, of
whom 4 do acute medical on call and 2 do acute stroke on call in
addition. Interests include stroke, delirium/dementia, Parkinson’s
disease, orthogeriatrics and gastroenterological problems in the
elderly. The department also consists of one Liaison Psychiatrist
and two Specialist Psychiatry nurses visiting one day a week. The
department serves the northeast of Cumbria with a catchment
population of around 300,000.
 Contribute to supervision and training of F1 doctors, and
training of students.
 Assist F1 doctors with clinical workload.
 Attend out-patient clinics for training purposes in a
supernumerary capacity.
 Attend investigational sessions, and other interventional
sessions, again in a supernumerary capacity.
 Develop practical skills and where appropriate commence
more specialist practical skills appropriate to their chosen
career.
 Attend Community Psychiatry clinics where possible
 Contribute to initial assessment and management of patients
with delirium or dementia on a regular basis
 Contribute to quality improvement projects in managing
patients with dementia

Main duties of the placement
Dr Jim George, Dr Allan Duncan
Clinical assessment of patients and initiation of initial management.
Contributing to multidisciplinary care and management of patients
including interactions with patients, their family, friends and carers.
Undertaking specific practical tasks. Prioritising care of inpatients,
liaising with middle and senior medical staff and nursing staff and
maintaining good medical records.
Prioritising issues to be dealt with by other staff including senior
medical staff. Contributing to discharge planning and ensuring that
appropriate social and medical arrangements are in place for
discharge home or to other institutions and appropriate
arrangements for on-going care. The F2 is encouraged to attend
outpatient clinics

Mon: WR with middle grade
Tues: Consultant ward round& MDT
Wed: Ward Round with Liaison Psychiatrist
Thurs: medical grand round
Fri: Consultant ward round elderly care educational meeting
On call requirements:
There is a 1 : 7 rota for evening shifts and weekends. There is no
night time commitment in this placement.
Employer information
North Cumbria Acute Hospitals NHS Trust was formed in April2001
and encompasses both the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, which
was the first PFI Hospital in the UK, (comprising 444 beds), and the
West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven (which has 425 beds). The
Trust provides a wide range of Clinical support services and most
modern investigational methods are now available on site. The
hospitals primarily provide services for North Cumbrian residents,
but they also offer services to patients in Dumfries and Galloway,
the Borders and parts of Northumberland. Nearly all specialities are
represented; three are sub-regional and several others are supradistrict in nature.
The hospitals provide healthcare for a catchment area of around
