Guidelines for making up absences whilst on Supernumerary Clinical Placement Supernumerary placement requires students to complete 35 hours per week 31 hours contact time and 4 hours protected reflective time. 100 % attendance is required, and all time missed must be made up (Requirements and Standards For Nurse / Midwife Registration Education Programmes 3rd ed, 2005). Short placements – 1 to 2 weeks duration Normally, during the placement, students are permitted to make up time equivalent to one shift absence Placement of 4 weeks duration or longer Normally, during a clinical placement of 4 weeks duration or longer, students are permitted to make up time equivalent to two shifts / absences Make–up time may only be undertaken on a Monday to Friday basis (Monday to Sunday – Midwifery Students at Our Lady Of Lourdes Hosp only) Maximum number of hours that may be worked in any one week is 48hrs ( in line with EU Working Directive ) The make-up time must be agreed with, and is at the discretion of the Practice Development team, CPC’s and Clinical Nurse/Midwifery Manager. It must also be in line with the preceptor’s / associate preceptor’s duty roster and service availability, in order to facilitate the assessment process. Make-up time must be clearly documented on the time sheet submitted to DKIT All outstanding Clinical Placement time must be completed prior to progression to the next stage of the programme. This make-up time will be facilitated during the Summer holiday period only, following the Exam Board Meeting. The time will be re-allocated by the Allocations Liaison Officer in negotiation with Clinical Area Managers/Practice Development Teams. PLEASE NOTE: STUDENTS ARE ADVISED TO REMEMBER THE ABOVE WHEN MAKING PLANS FOR SUMMER HOLIDAYS. Use of these guidelines by students will be monitored and reviewed on an on-going basis.
