Course Syllabus: General Music Petal High School 2015-2016 Shanna Luckett/Ashley Bolling, teachers Room: Chorus Room, Music Building (601) 583-8323 shanna.luckett@petalschools.com OR ashley.bolling@petalschools.com Course Description: This is a music class guided by the Mississippi State Frameworks for high school general music. During this course, students will use the text MUSIC! Its Role and Importance in Our Lives to explore the many aspects of music. Grading, Assessments, and Specific Assignments used in this course: The general curriculum of the class will be guided by the previously mentioned textbook. Assessments will be made according to the material covered either in the book or discussed during class. Class assignments are expected to be completed in a timely manner and the teacher reserves the right to grade vocabulary, notes, or assignments at any time. Students will be expected to complete assignments during given research opportunities. Students will be able to correct failing test grades on their own time. Corrected test questions will be credited (with the exception of true/false questions) and averaged with the first test grade for a new, hopefully passing, grade. Course Content: The text (MUSIC! Its Role and Importance in Our Lives) will guide a majority of the class discussions and assignments. We will use various other materials to aid in lectures and listening. Notes on the Course: We expect students to complete a majority of their work in class. If students miss class/assignments, it is their responsibility to make arrangements for the completion of the missed work. We will allow and encourage bonus points to be earned using the handout entitled General Music: How to Earn Bonus Points. Please also keep in mind the absences allowed in this class in order to be exempt from the final exam (Year Long - no more than 12 with an A, only 2 with a B; Semester – nor more than 6 with an A, only 1 with a B). My expectations of this class: 1. Always listen with an open mind. Keep in mind that not all people like the same types of music. I hope to cover a wide variety during the course of the semester. 2. Always be respectful. It is difficult for us to respect you if you have been disrespectful to us. 3. Always be willing to try. Some elements of music require us to step out of our comfort zone. Try everything at least once!
