Microbiology BIOL 2104 Course Philosophy and Instructor Requirements Philosophy: In Microbiology, students should learn basic concepts associated with bacteria, viruses and specific eukaryotic microorganisms, including growth, diversity, genetics, control of growth, pathogenesis, and immunology. Objectives: All students will: Use a microscope properly and perform various staining techniques for the identification of basic morphology. Also perform other staining techniques for specialized needs. Understand the chemical nature and biochemical processes associated with host-parasite relationships in disease condition. Understand the adaptive and non-specific nature of the immune system. Also describe immunological processes involved in ridding the host of pathogens. Describe the structure and function of the genetic material (DNA). Distinguish among the various metabolic pathways common to prokaryotes. Describe optimal chemical and physical growth conditions, as well as specific growth requirements for specific bacteria. Course Teaching Requirements: The following information applies to all instructors teaching this course. Although order of topics may vary, the following concepts must be covered: history of microbiology, biochemistry, prokaryotic cell characteristics (with emphasis on bacteria), metabolism, genetics, biotechnology, prokaryotic classification, viruses, host-microbe interactions, pathogenicity of microbes, non-specific immunology, adaptive immunology, control of bacterial growth, antimicrobials. The course must have a lab component where students use a microscope, perform various stains for identification purposes, and determine physical and chemical growth requirements of bacteria. The final exam must have a comprehensive component. Assessment responsibilities: Instructors teaching this course will be expected to participate in assessment activities as dictated by the division. Information will be provided by the lead instructor during the term that assessments are to be completed.
