OT 231 Medical Office Procedures Fall 2013

COURSE DESCRIPTION
BUS 231 - Master Course Outline
Credits: 5
Required Textbook
Description
Explores the flow of information in a medical office. MediSoft, Office Hours, and MS Word software
programs are utilized to process information and produce typical medical office documents, financial
records, and insurance claims.
Materials used:

Computers in the Medical Office, 8th ed by Sanders
Learning Outcomes:

Schedule and manage appointments.

Schedule inpatient and outpatient admissions and procedures.

Organize a patient's medical record and file medical record


Perform Bookkeeping Procedures
Complete Insurance Claims Forms
Student Responsibilities:

Prepare for class sessions by completing the reading and exercise assignments.

Participate in class discussions.

Late work is not accepted. Tests are to be taken when scheduled.

Part 2 - Case Studies

45% of the final grade is based on chapter tests. After completion of a chapter, a chapter test will be
given. Tests are to be taken when scheduled.

35% of the final grade is based on homework assignments. Late assignments are not accepted.


20% will be based on the final exam.
Two of the lowest test scores will be dropped

Final letter grade is the averaged percentage earned applied to the following scale:
100 – 93% = A
76 – 73% = C
92 – 90% = A-
72 – 70% = C-
89 – 87% = B+
69 – 67% = D+
86 – 83% = B
66 – 60% = D
82 – 80% = B-
59% and below = F
79 – 77% = C+

Please stay current you will be expected to discuss assignments and videos in class and so you need to
be prepared for that.

ATTENDANCE:
Attendance is very important to both the learning process and building
professional work habits. ,
Class participation, including class attendance class, and participating in class
and online discussions, is 10% of your grade
CELL PHONES:
Please turn off cell phones in the classroom
The use of cell phones, including sending and receiving text messages, is not
permitted in the classroom. s.
Students will be penalized 5 points if their mobile device rings during class.
CHILDREN IN THE
WWCC policy does not allow children in the classroom.
CLASSROOM:
Please arrange for childcare before coming to class.

EXTRA CREDIT:
Extra credit assignment s for five (5) additional points ,may be assigned.
. Students may earn a maximum of ten (10) extra credit points.
Please note “extra” means “added on to” and not “instead of”; you are expected
to complete your regular assignments.
FINAL EXAM:
The final exam is scheduled for Thursday December 12 and not offered another
time.
Please plan your work and vacation schedules accordingly. If you miss the final
exam for whatever reason, you will forfeit those points.
FOOD & DRINKS:
Light food and beverage in class
No food or beverages permitted during guest lectures
HOMEWORK:
Homework assignments will be assigned and posted in Canvas with due
dates.
Additional work may be assigned if extra practice is needed.
You are still responsible for submitting assignments even if you were absent
from class
LATE
Lateness is not acceptable in the business world. Please use your time in
ASSIGNMENTS:
school to develop good work habits.
Late homework will be accepted NO LATER THAN two (2) class days after it is
due. Starting day three, one (1) point per day will be deducted for late
assignments.
TESTS:
Tests may not be made up except for an extraordinary and unforeseeable
emergency.
In the event that a test needs to be made up, it must be done within one week
of the original test date.
TEXTBOOKS
Every student must have his/her own textbook and workbook.
