FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 03 March 2011 Coach Lab programme changes lives of alumni A partnership between the Innovation Hub and the Tshwane University of Technology’s Faculty of Information and Communication Technology has given nine alumni who recently graduated from TUT a huge career boost and competitive edge in the job market. The Coach Lab Leadership and Business Skills Development Programme is aimed at attracting top postgraduate students majoring in ICT related courses such as Computer Science, Informatics and Engineering, and it prepares them for leadership positions in the (ICT) industry. It is aligned to post-graduate programmes at universities and prepares students to become highly skilled knowledgeable workers in the ICT industry. The programme provides structure for graduates within an entrepreneurial environment through an intense nine-month training on leadership and soft skills, industry mentorship and coaching. It also provides an opportunity for students to work on industry related projects. The sponsors and partners invest their skills, time and knowledge to create the optimum learning experience for the programme participants. The industry provides project work, mentorship and supervision, and they in return gain access to highly skilled post-graduates to execute specific tasks. The university provide academic oversight and form links with industry and obtain feedback for curriculum development. Chuma Nombewu, a graduate, says she strongly recommends the programme to other students as it offers a competitive advantage over fellow job seekers. “I believe that the programme allows participants to gain confidence in the work place and to make contributions in meetings,” she adds. Another graduate, Michael Modiba, says he completed his diploma at TUT in 2005 and in 2009 obtained his BTech –cum laude in Computer Networks. In 2010 he participated in the Coach Lab programme and this year, he will register for an MTech at TUT. He says he owes his achievements to the support of staff at the Faculty of ICT.
