Minimum requirements
 A doctorate degree in languages / linguistics or a relevant equivalent qualification.
 Five years managing and teaching experience at a tertiary institution in languages.
 A proven track record of research, publications and master's and doctorate supervision.
 Knowledge of the Higher Education Act, policies and frameworks.
 Knowledge of TUT policies, National Language Policy and Language Policy in
Educational Act.
 Good communication skills.
 Computer literacy.
Core functions
 Heads of department are academic leaders responsible for academic, research and
technological excellence and management of the department.
 Academic responsibilities will include lecturing and supervision of students in postgraduate programmes and conducting research relevant to applied languages.
 Involvement in teaching and learning, research and community engagement.
 Coordinating activities in the department for all learning sites.
 Managing a diverse department which offers undergraduate and postgraduate
qualifications and other departments in languages throughout the institution.
 Integrate the mission statement of TUT into teaching and learning practices
 Liaise with other departments at TUT as well as stakeholders.
 Leading and coordinating departmental planning and curriculum development and
promoting excellence and quality in teaching and learning, research and community
service at TUT.
 Managing and leading research activities and research capacity building.
 Establish linkages with other institutions of learning and the business sector.
 Apply scientific scholarly research to improve teaching and learning.
 Mentor staff and students in research activities.
 Present papers at local, regional and international professional conferences, conduct
workshops and organise seminars in language related themes.
 Work overtime when the need arise and travel in between campuses.
