3C’s Monday Memo October 5, 2015 . Math: We will begin the addition/subtraction unit. We will begin with the accompanying math vocabulary, the inverse connection, and fact strategies to help them as we move on to larger numbers. Estimation will allow students to continue practicing rounding skills. Your childe should have brought home the SOL math workbook. We reuse them every year so please do not let them wrote in them. Use them for test review questions and sometimes I may assign pages for homework and the answers will go in the math notebook. Memorizing math facts is very important in 3rd grade. REFLEX is available at home, 7 days a week. Science: This week’s unit is the Matter Unit. We will be discussing physical properties, and solids. Liquids, and gasses. Notes will be glued in the notebook. Reading: This week’s focus will be understanding nonfiction and identifying/using text features to build comprehension when meeting in guided reading groups. In addition, we will finally begin Scholastic News! Most students are making great progress on their reading logs. Please have them continue filling in if they have reached 8 books. Two students have already completed the entire log! Thanks for your help at home. Word Study This week is choice on Tuesday and practice test on Thursday. The test will Friday, October 9th. If you have time, sorting nightly helps students that need extra practice. Writer’s Workshop: We will be working on learning the steps good writers do, editing practice, and choosing one of the “small moment” pieces from last week to publish. This week we will choose one piece written so far to publish. In addition, we have been working in our cursive handwriting books. We have been working on strong word choice, using apostrophes, and proper nouns. This week we will working on identifying complete and incomplete sentences. Star Students: Sebastian and Lauren!!! We look forward to them sharing their posters and any extra pictures of favorite memories they would like to share. Announcements: Please be sure you have signed up for a PT conference on Sign-up Genius. If you did not get an invite, please email me. Summer Reading Celebration is Thursday, October 15th LIES is having a coat drive for students in need at other schools. Please consider sending in your child’s outgrown jacket to meet the needs of others. One of the ways I love to get to know my students is by watching what they do outside of school. If I can work it into my schedule, I would like to come to your child’s game, recital, etc. If you send me the schedule for the event, I will try to work it into mine. Thanks for working with me to make sure the students have nutritional snacks. Thanks for signing the planner daily and helping with homework as well! If you have read this memo, print out a copy and sign for your child. He/she will receive an extra sticker for good behavior chart!! Due Tuesday morning. Have a great week!
