3C’s Monday Memo December 7, 2015 .Math: This week’s focus is division, word problems, and 2 by 1 digit multiplication. I cannot stress enough for students to regularly practice learning the facts. Start with the ones, twos, and fives. Pull out only these facts until they are memorized. Then you can start by adding in the fours. If you don’t already have multiplication flash cards, I would purchase a set for your student. See websites under Feddersen for new choices. Also sol teacher is a good site. Memorizing math facts is very important in 3rd grade. REFLEX is available at home, 7 days a week. Word Study This week is week 2 with choice on Tuesday and practice test on Thursday. The choice list is glued in the notebook. If you have time, sorting nightly helps students that need extra practice. Writer’s Workshop: The gingerbread stories turned out great and are hanging in the hall along with your child’s “cookie”. If you get a chance, check them out. This week the students will be reviewing the parts of a letter and then writing a letter to a wounded soldier in the Army Medical Center. That way the students get a change to thank our soldiers and give them a “pick-me-up” while they are healing. We will also work on daily grammar rules. Announcements: st Science: We will complete the 1 semester science project assessment on Monday. This replaces the science SOL test from past years. Then we will begin ancient civilizations, starting with ancient Greece. If any parent has been to Greece and would like to share your experience, we would love to listen to you. One of the ways I love to get to know my students is by watching what they do outside of school. If I can work it into my schedule, I would like to come to your child’s game, recital, etc. If you send me the schedule for the event, I will try to work it into mine. Reading: We will focus on vocabulary and types/levels of questions. Our question types are right there, search and find, and on your own. Thanks for working with me to make sure the students have nutritional snacks. Thanks for signing the planner daily and helping with homework as well! Please make sure your child is carefully reading Raz Kids and looking for the answers. The scores have been low. It is a good idea to go over the missed questions one on one to help prepare for the SOL test. I will be writing the reading benchmark test score in the planners. Many need to see improvement in that area. If you have read this memo, print out a copy and sign for your child. He/she will receive an extra sticker for good behavior chart!! Due Tuesday morning. Have a great week! Mrs. Feddersen Karen.Feddersen@lcps.org
