3C’s Monday Memo November 16, 2015 .Math: This week we will begin the multiplication unit! The students are very excited. A great way to reinforce the concept is to look at items that come in groups. For example, juice boxes in threes stand for 1X 3 = 3 but a group of 9 would be 3X3. I cannot stress enough for students to regularly practice learning the facts. Start with the ones, twos, and fives. Pull out only these facts until they are memorized. Then you can start by adding in the fours. If you don’t already have multiplication flash cards, I would purchase a set for your student. Multiplication.com is a fun sight to practice. Memorizing math facts is very important in 3rd grade. REFLEX is available at home, 7 days a week. Science: We will continue the natural phases unit over the sun, moon, and earth. Ask your student to rotate and revolve for you while you act as the sun. Ask how long that would take, what is the difference, etc. to help him/her really understand the concept. Study cards are in the notebook and can be reviewed as time allows. All other notes are also in the science notebook. Reading: This week we are focusing on vocabulary, revising predictions, and cause and effect. Please make sure your child is carefully reading Raz Kids and looking for the answers. The scores have been low. It is a good idea to go over the missed questions one on one to help prepare for the SOL test. I will be writing the reading benchmark test score in the planners. Many need to see improvement in that area. Word Study This week is week 2 with choice on Tuesday and practice test on Thursday. The new choice list is glued in the notebook. If you have time, sorting nightly helps students that need extra practice. Writer’s Workshop: We will be working on writing a persuasive story. The students will be a gingerbread cookie trying to persuade humans to NOT eat them. I am thinking possibly about ending the unit with decorating gingerbread cookies if any parents are willing to provide cookies, frosting, and Star Students: This week’s star students are Leah and Anish. No boys turned a poster. We look forward to them sharing their posters and any extra pictures of favorite memories they would like to share. Announcements: American Education Week is this week, November 20th. 8:00 - 8:30 Book Fair 8:30 - 9:00 AEW Lesson One of the ways I love to get to know my students is by watching what they do outside of school. If I can work it into my schedule, I would like to come to your child’s game, recital, etc. If you send me the schedule for the event, I will try to work it into mine. Thanks for working with me to make sure the students have nutritional snacks. Thanks for signing the planner daily and helping with homework as well! If you have read this memo, print out a copy and sign for your child. He/she will receive an extra sticker for good behavior chart!! Due Tuesday morning. Have a great week!
