PERSONAL FINANCIAL LITERACY - COURSE SYLLABUS Ms. Carver tara.carver@jenksps.org Room 2504 918-299-4415 x2544 Welcome to Personal Financial Literacy (PFL)! I am very excited to get to spend this semester with you, exploring the benefits of financial awareness and planning. My goal is to help you enjoy the class and take the experience and content with you in years to come. This syllabus will outline the guidelines to help the class run smoothly and help you succeed in this class. This will be an exciting year. Be ready to be challenged and have fun! COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is required for all students prior to graduation. It will cover all 14 standards required by the State of Oklahoma. Students must pass all 14 standards in order to pass the course. These standards are: Earning an Income, Taxes, Financial Service Providers, Managing a Bank Account, Saving & Investing, Retirement Planning, Borrowing Money, Credit Cards & Online Shopping, Fraud & Identity Theft, Renting vs. Buying, Insurance & Risk Management, Gambling, Bankruptcy, and Charitable Giving. CLASS MATERIALS: 1 ½ “ , 3 – ring binder 14 tab dividers 1 pkg Notebook paper Pencils, Pens Flash drive CLASS PROCEDURES: Sharpen pencils, be in your seat, take care of restroom and drinks before the bell rings. Be ready to start class immediately. We work from bell to bell (and have fun doing it!) Read the marker board first thing every day. Follow any instructions posted and check for homework. EXPECTATIONS: Respect – for yourself, other students, faculty, substitutes and me. Tools of the Trade - Bring all materials to class, you’re almost old enough to drive, you’re old enough to be responsible for your belongings. Take Action - YOU are responsible for reading the textbook. I will not go over the chapter word by word. We will spend class having fun with the subject matter! Also, TAKE NOTES!!! (Hint: it helps when studying for a test!) Food/Drinks – NO food or drink. NO GUM!!!! Tardies/Absences – Handled in accordance to School Policy. Also, it’s very hard to be successful in this class if you are not here, so attendance is very important. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: Yes, it’s not the most exciting of subjects, but I like to use a variety of teaching strategies to help meet the various learning styles of students and make it fun! I do expect you to come to class having read the material and are ready to discuss it in class. GRADING SYSTEM: Your grade will be determined on a point value system, including homework, class participation, tests/quizzes, and projects. Final exam (comprehensive) = 15% of your final grade. Grades are always available on Power School. Cheating - Don’t do it! You are completely capable of succeeding without this nonsense! Besides, any form of cheating will result in a zero grade for the assignment, a conference with me after school and a letter sent home to be signed your parent/guardian. Sounds fun, huh? MAKE-UP/LATE POLICY: If you are absent, you are responsible for the make-up work the day after you return to school. You can get class notes from one of your fellow students. Make-up tests/quizzes will be given during Advisory or an agreed time between the student and teacher. FINAL THOUGHTS: The student should always come to me with any questions or concerns and I will make sure to let you know if there is room for improvement in class. However, if your parent/guardian ever has questions, they can contact me via email or phone. I want you to succeed! Don’t be afraid to try!
