BASIC FUNCTIONS:

Under the direction of the Dean, Letters and Sciences and the Dean, Admissions, Assessment and Student Aid Programs, coordinate all aspects of MiraCosta College's International Student

Program and Study/Teach/Work Abroad Programs. Coordinate MiraCosta College's participation in international/multi cultural perspectives initiatives and in arranging for visiting scholars, Fullbright lectures, CIU (Center for International Understanding) activities, etc.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

1. Coordinate international student admission and matriculation services in accordance with

U.S. Immigration and Naturalization regulations.

Recruit qualified students to maintain our enrollment goals.

Coordinate advisement of new and continuing international students on immigration issues, transfer requirements, housing, finance, IRS and cultural sensitivity.

4. Initiate and maintain positive relations with English language schools, businesses and public agencies.

5. Initiate, organize and attend recruitment fairs, community events, workshops and conferences to represent and promote the District and to attract prospective international students, such as Quest International, NAFSA, international festivals, transfer nights, etc.

6. Coordinate the District's community college consortia opportunity abroad programs, a duty which involves designing and delivering oral presentations and workshops for faculty, staff, students and their parents regarding opportunities, requirements, pre-departure and visa issues.

Work with Financial Aid to facilitate study abroad opportunities.

Maintain a partnership with the office of student relations in promoting interaction and understanding among local ethnic groups and foreign students.

9. Chair the International Education Committee which is charged with oversight of study abroad programs.

10. Administer the program budget as assigned, authorizing expenditures.

11. Coordinate, supervise and participate in activities that promote international education and multicultural perspectives, such as plan-a-lecture series and provide advice to student run organizations which promote cultural and international awareness.

12. Supervise Secretary, Student Services Coordinator and hourly counselor(s).

13. Determine program needs, formulate action plans, compile statistical records for reports, and submit appropriate program development plans.

14. Monitor international students for satisfactory academic progress.

15. Meet with international students who are in danger of being dismissed for not achieving program requirements and develop corrective plans.

16. Maintain department web page. Consistently use Internet as a research and communication tool.

17. Prepare brochures, newsletters, and other informational materials.

18. Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Requirements, guidelines, rules and objectives of assigned areas of student and instructional services.

Interviewing techniques.

Methods and practices of recordkeeping and report preparation.

Principles of training and supervision.

Oral and written communication skills.

Correct English usage grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

Applicable sections of State Education Code and other applicable laws.

District organization, operations, policies and objectives.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Budget preparation and control.

Appropriate computer applications.

ABILITY TO:

Plan, organize and implement programs and activities in assigned student and instructional services' areas.

Coordinate, develop and implement services and activities to recruit, retain and assist students.

Analyze, interpret, apply and explain policies and procedures for college programs and services.

Provide accurate information to students regarding college programs and services.

Develop and monitor budget.

Maintain records and prepare reports.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Meet schedules and timelines.

Work independently with little direction.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Train, supervise, and evaluate others.

Work confidentially with discretion.

Prepare and deliver oral presentations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to a Baccalaureate degree and directly related work experience.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California driver license.

WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Secretary I, Student Services Coordinator, student workers, interns, volunteers and counselor(s)

CONTACTS:

Administrators, faculty, staff, students, other department personnel, public, vendors, parents,

U.S. Immigration Services, community organizations, and press.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending, and stooping; occasional light lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or less; ability to travel to a variety of locations on- and off-campus as needed to conduct District business.

EMOTIONAL EFFORTS:

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and communications personally, by phone and in writing, with a variety of individuals and/or groups of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, ongoing basis; ability to work effectively under pressure on a variety of tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Primarily business office environment; subject to frequent public contract and interruption; usual assignment worked during daylight hours with occasional evening, weekend, and/or holiday hours required on an as-needed basis.
