MIRACOSTA COLLEGE

CLASS TITLE: COORDINATOR, COMMUNICATION DESIGN

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Director of Marketing and Communication, develop, design and coordinate production of a variety of publications including the college catalog and class schedules; produce graphic artwork for college printed and electronic communications including the college website; participate in development of materials for promotion of various college programs and services.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

1. Design and coordinate production and printing of class schedules and the college catalog; compile, organize and coordinate input from a wide variety of sources to produce publications for the District; edit and proofread copy; design and illustrate one-, two- and four-color publications; take digital photos; select paper stock and ink colors; produce camera-ready artwork; establish effective timelines with printers. 2. Work with the Marketing and Communications staff, college faculty and other college staff to research, develop, design and direct publication of materials for the recruitment of students and staff, and for the promotion of a wide variety of college programs and events, including newsletters, programs, brochures, flyers, advertisements and components of college-wide information systems. (E)

3. Design and prepare graphics, illustrations and written materials for printed and electronic publication and other campus uses, such as campus signs and computer networks. (E)

4. Develop specifications and coordinate with Purchasing and Material Management for

District printing and publishing bids for class schedules and college catalog. (E)

5. Confer with District personnel and committees; act as liaison between off-campus printers and the college.

6. Develop and publish institutional web pages for presentation to the college and to the public.

7. Provide technical expertise and advice to faculty, staff and administrators concerning graphics work requests; clarify information, formats and design possibilities. (E)

8. Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

District organization, operations, policies and objectives.

Industry standard graphic design software including page layout, photo manipulation and enhancement, vector illustration, web page layout, word processing and spreadsheet.

Principles of marketing and advertising design.

Methods, practices, terminology and procedures used in print design and preparation of files for a variety of print processes.

Type families; colors, inks and paper stock used in printing.

Appropriate electronic design tools.

Digital cameras and photographic techniques.

Website architecture, HTML, HTML editors, web publishing procedures.

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.

Record keeping techniques.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

ABILITY TO:

Learn to interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures and apply them in a variety of procedural situations.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Operate a variety of office equipment, including computer and appropriate software.

Design and produce one-, two- and four-color artwork for District publications.

Estimate costs and analyze cost effectiveness of pieces prior to production.

Use a digital camera.

Set up and meet schedules and timelines.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Work independently with little direction.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Maintain records and prepare reports.

Work as a member of a team.

Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic and disability issues.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education and experience equivalent to Bachelor’s degree in art, communications, graphic arts or related major or equivalent and two years directly related work experience or an Associates degree in art, communications, graphic arts or related major or equivalent and six years directly related work experience.

WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Not assigned permanent staff to supervise. Provides work direction to student workers and/or temporary staff.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending and stooping; occasional light lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or less; subject to frequent to constant visual stress, and repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control devices for extended periods of time; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus as-needed to conduct district business.

EMOTIONAL EFFORT:

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to concentrate on detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other responsibilities; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Primarily busy, office environment; intermittent to frequent contact with and interruptions by individuals in person or by phone; occasional exposure to impatient, angry and/or verbally aggressive individuals; may be required to work at any district location during day and/or evening hours including occasional weekends on an as-needed basis.
