Professional Education BSEd Secondary Oversight Committee February 13, 2015 Meeting Minutes 1:30 pm – PSU 314 Attendees Paul Ajuwon, Chris Craig, Kim Dubree, Angela Kohnen, Julie Leeth, Carol Maples, Michelle Morgan, Diana Piccolo, Debra Price, Gayle Runke, Gigi Saunders, Eric Sheffield, James Sottile, Tonia Tinsley, Steve Willis, and Rebecca Woodard I. II. Call to Order A monthly meeting of the Missouri State University BSEd Secondary Oversight Committee convened at 1:30 pm. Chair elect Dr. Angela Kohnen presiding. A quorum was established. Approval of Minutes Motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes of the January 16, 2015 meeting. Motion carried. III. Announcements & Updates 1. Ozarks Teacher Corps – Julie Leeth Dr. Chris Craig introduced Julie Leeth from Community Foundation of the Ozarks. She went on to discuss the application (handout) for the Ozarks Teacher Corps. This is an annual scholarship of $4,000. Julie Leeth explained the application requirements and the rural schools partnership. The deadline for the application is March 20, 2015. 2. PEC Update – Diana Piccolo, Chair Reported. The changing of PEC to EPPC (Educator Preparation Provider Council) was presented to Faculty Senate. Everyone seemed to approve. The actual voting will be at the next Faculty Senate meeting. 3. Secondary Education Update – Rebecca Woodard, Director Reported Send any override requests via email to Dr. Woodard. The MEP/MoGEA is about a month turnaround time. IV. Old Business 1. Advisory Board Meeting (Topic/Questions) – Angela Kohnen The committee was asked to be thinking of any topics/questions for the Advisory Board Meeting April 10. It was suggested that Recruitment of New Teacher Candidates be one of the topics. Also, with students doing tasks for MoPTA, if mentoring time has been cut and how other changes are affecting them, and how Smarter Balance is going. V. New Business 1. Program Review Committee – Rebecca Woodard The committee had previously put together a template. The template no longer aligns with DESE changes, so the charge for the committee this spring will be to complete the following: a. Standards and Program-Based Assessment Alignment – Due February 27. b. MoSPE Matrix Alignment – Due March 31. c. DESE Certification Matrix Alignment – Due May 2. Secondary Education Core Changes – Rebecca Woodard A handout of the recommendation from the Ad-Hoc Committee on the Secondary Core Changes was reviewed by the BSEd Committee. A motion was made and seconded to table the proposal and bring if forward at the next BSEd meeting when more members will be present. Motion carried. 3. Field Experiences – Kim Dubree Field Experiences will not be meeting with student eachers the first day of school as they have done in the past. Kim asked if there were any volunteers to work on the Student Teaching Handbook, and Tonia Tinsley volunteered. VI. Adjournment Meeting adjourned at 3 pm. Mandate of the BSED-Secondary Education Oversight Committee: The BSED-Secondary Education Oversight Committee shall monitor the common elements of the BSED-Secondary Education program. The committee shall have responsibility for initiating program changes within common elements of the program and reporting those recommended changes to the PEC [Profession Education Committee]. Every department/school having a BSED-Secondary Education program shall select a representative from their fulltime PEU faculty. The School of Teacher Education shall select two representatives from their full-time PEU faculty who have responsibility for core courses in the BSED-Secondary Education program. The Director of Secondary Education, Head of the PEU or his/her designee, the Director of Certification and Compliance, a representative from both the Education Field Experience office and the Professional Education Advisement office shall serve as non-voting, ex officio members of this committee. At the March session, the chair-elect from the previous year shall assume duties as the chair of the BSED committee and a new chair-elect from the current committee membership shall be elected and assume duties as chair-elect. The chair of the committee shall be a delegate to PEC. (PEC Bylaws 2010).
