Approval of minutes from December i. Motion to approve, Matt Minister, Ray Chiara second, all in favor, Kyle Winfree abstains Appreciation to David Camacho a. Thanked for leadership and guidance over eight years, helped to usher the committee into commission status. Center for University Access and Inclusion (see attached) a. Priscilla Mills joined the commission meeting to discuss the new center and the coming changes. b. This has been a discussion since last December to increase efficiencies around diversity. i. The Center creates a new structure 1. The Chief Diversity Officer position will be Cabinet level a. Spearhead the diversity strategic planning process (long range) b. Create efficiency, organizational collaboration 2. Disability Resources and the Equity and Access Office are both under this new umbrella. 3. Accommodations for both faculty/staff and students will now be under DR a. The student accommodation process won’t change b. A dedicated person will be identified/hired as the point of contact for faculty/staff and visitors within DR 4. Jamie Axelrod will be the university’s 504/ADA Coordinator 5. Teresa Haven coming on as the new accessibility analyst was a huge plus 6. Pam Heinonen is taking over day-to-day operations of EAO 7. Priscilla’s new title will be Assistant VP for Equity and Compliance 8. Centralization of event advertising and calendar updates ii. There was a lot of discussion about what the center would be called PO Box 4142 Flagstaff, AZ 86011-4142 (928) 523-0708 (fax) IV. 1. The center does not have a physical location but is a virtual organization 2. Implementation will happen in phases: a. Realign compliance b. Grants c. Opportunity for research and faculty involvement i. This includes: assessment, to inform compliance; encourage collaboration; eventually have a journal c. Questions: i. How will commission work interface with the center? 1. Commissions remain separate and have a direct line to the president. The hope is that the center can help facilitate collaborations between commissions ii. Org chart clarification: How will we have a connection to the cabinet? 1. Priscilla will always have direct access to the president 2. When the CDO job description is finalized it will be clearer – that will inform some of these questions. iii. Jamie – The commission’s role can be to really ensure that disability is a part of diversity, advocate for our cause. 1. NAU sees disability as a part of diversity. David says that’s a given within the diversity officers profession. iv. Will curriculum be a part of this? Specifically disability studies as part of diversity requirement? 1. Nothing is off the table, advocate for value and new approaches for collaboration. This is where the job description becomes important. d. Search committee i. The plan is to give time for letters of interest to serve on the committee to come in before the committee is formed (2 weeks) 1. Priscilla will take the names and meet with the president and decide how big the committee will be. 2. The job description will be on the new center website 3. Once the committee is formed, the names will be listed there as well. Showcasing UD a. Matt Minister and Jamie Axelrod created a list of features of the new buildings i. The idea is to have information on screens in SAS, ATC, and SHB (where available) and/or the CDAD website highlighting the UD features. ii. What are our next steps? 1. There are some similarities to all the new buildings, e.g. sloping sidewalks to the entrances iii. What do we want to do now? 1. We can talk to campus tours and provide the UD information for them to use during tours which will expose more people to this information. Tours will begin in the SAS now. 3. Matt will create a PowerPoint a. Lauren and Matt will work with a Marketing photographer to capture images illustrating UD in each building. b. There may be construction images available through Facility Services as well. iv. David suggested a letter to Jennus and John for kudos (Chris and Lauren will work on this) Campus Climate Survey a. Survey was sent to students on Sunday, January 18th. This year’s survey includes questions about disability. Nominations a. CDAD co-chair – nominate by February 5th, election survey will then go out b. Leadership Award – Nomination form opens January 25th and closes March 9th i. David will check with Isa on the date for the diversity banquet Spring Events (So Far?) a. Hole in the Head, Feb. 23, sponsored by IMS – great opportunity for classes b. UDL Workshop, sponsored by ELC, March 30th from 12:30-2:00 in the teaching commons. Matt Minister and Megan Kipp are teaching, students welcome c. SPROUT Film Festival, April 22, sponsored by ARC of Arizona (see attached) d. Possible event about representation in sports e. Matthew W. will do his conversation about disability sometime in March, date TBD f. NAU 4 All will have a scavenger hunt, details TBD, probably in March. g. NAU has a week called Sex Week run through Health Promotion that focuses on reducing risky sexual behaviors within the student population; Matthew has been asked to do a talk about sex and people with disabilities on Monday, February 8th, 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Union where the Starbucks used to be. Other Business a. Construction update i. Bookstore renovation has been scaled back ii. Worthwhile to go check out the new SAS building b. Robert LeMoyne is leaving Flagstaff for a consulting job but will telecommute for our meetings. c.
