Review of CDAD Priorities and Strategic Goals (see attached documents)
a. to be shared with the Council on Inclusion and Equity
i. Strategic goals were reviewed and discussed. The top issues were put
forward to be included in the CDAD strategic plan portion of the diversity
plan. The goals are:
1. Institutional support for the disability studies minor. There is
institutional support for other diversity minors, why isn’t the DS
minor included in that funding?
a. Kathy gave an overview of the history of the program
within SBS.
i. There is a concern over resources at SBS
ii. Any discussion about hard money support of the
DS minor needs to include the SBS Dean
b. The DS minor needs to be recognized within the definition
of global diversity. Should work with the new provost.
c. We need to explain how this program is fairly unique by
discussing the number of DS programs across the nation.
This really sets NAU apart.
2. Collaboration with other commissions and departments was
identified as a top priority.
3. Accessible environments
a. Support for access for all types of environments both
physical and virtual/informational
4. Inclusion of disability in all curriculum
a. Faculty development topic
5. Cluster hiring

6. Jamie suggested that we need to be a part of the discussion
around recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and students.
a. We need to include it in our plan
III.
Cline All Gender/Accessible restroom
a. An unused single stall restroom on the first floor of Cline has been identified as
the location for an all gender, ADA compliant restroom. CDAD has joined the
LGBTQIA Commission in support of the construction of this restroom. Currently,
$3,000 of ADA set-aside money has been dedicated toward the $15,000 project.
The LGBTQIA Commission is seeking support for the remainder of the funds
needed. An account has been established with Facility Services and a Project
Manager has been assigned. Marion and Matthew from the LGBTQIA
Commission have met with David and he is bringing the request to President
Cheng.
IV.
Discussion of October’s Disability…Month
a. Results of survey
i. Only one response to the online form. TASH will do a number of events in
October. It was also suggested that the name be changed from Disability
Awareness.
ii. Name
1. A discussion of potential names began with Matthew W.’s
suggestion of Disability Pride and Heritage. Robert suggested
using the term “transcendence.” After a discussion of the terms it
was suggested that a simple name is best and Disability Heritage
Month was voted on.
2. Matthew W. moved, Matt M. & Robert second, all in favor
b. A student from Pam’s class suggested a possible topic could be a panel about
empowerment. It was also suggested that the NAU debate team might be
interested in using our discussion of terminology as a debate topic this year.
V.
Other business
a. The IRB forms are in the process of being redesigned and made accessible. They
should be available by September.
b. Parking Services has been diligently placing stickers with the new ISA on all
required vertical signage in the accessible parking stalls across campus. Erin and
her team are almost finished replacing the old ISA.
c. Matthew W. shared with the group that one of the NAU 4 All students was
tragically killed in a vehicle accident two weeks ago. NAU 4 All will have an event
in her honor in the fall.
d. Matthew also his experience at the Society of Disability Studies (SDS) meeting in
Atlanta.

are unusual as a campus organization – proposals are due in November.
