Department Updates
o Career Pathways (CP) – Megan Ruane:
1) Career Advancement Academy (CAA): Completing the 5th week of their internship at
Republic Recycling Services.
2) High School Concurrent Enrollment: Closed our Spring 2014 enrollment. Starting to
prepare for Fall 2014. Recruiting for Summer 2014 classes. Beginning to start a push for
articulation of students who have completed Project Lead the Way (PLTW) courses in
previous years.
Alicia Zambrano - Compton:
3) Putting all the logistics together for our (Career Technical Education) CTE Girls in
Technology Conference on May 2, 2014 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm, sponsored by our CTE
Division, CAA and Career Pathways.
4) Working on outreach and recruitment for our Workforce Innovation Partnership (WIP) Boot
Camp Summer Program for high school students.
5) Working on outreach and recruitment for our Machining/Aerospace Fastener summer
training program for adults.
6) Working on getting our CAA cohorts ready for fall semester.
o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT) – Traci Traina:
1) NSF (National Science Foundation) Grant: Waiting on announcements of NSF Grants
awarded.
2) H1-B Grant: Meeting to submit another H1-B Grant proposal.
3) WIP (Workforce Innovation Partnership): Holding two MTT 101 summer classes at
Compton College. Holding two summer classes at Cerritos College (Auto Tech and
Solidworks).
4) Mentor Protégé: Working on proposal for Year 2.
CACT Activities:
5) 32 hour (Certified Quality Engineer) CQE Certification course is starting in May.
6) Speaking with Northrop Grumman Corp to offer a CQE “Prep Course” to employees in
their Palmdale facility sometime this summer.
o Community Education – Veronica Mendoza:
1) Summer 2014 Catalog: Summer catalog featuring Kid’s College has been mailed and
distributed to libraries and community centers.
2) Project to Train “Plus 50” Workers press release about Community Education’s
AACC(American Association of Community Colleges)/Deerbrook Charitable grant to
provide free Computer Basics classes for plus 50 students enrolled in the Pharmacy
Technician or Medical Billing and Coding training courses went out of April 11th. Resulting
Daily Breeze newspaper article has generated many inquiry calls to the Community
Education office.
3) 2014 Ten Years After Events: Second event of the year will be on the topic of Oldsmobile
Ceasing Production (ten years ago) with ECC Automotive Instructor Michael Anderson and
will take place onThursday, April 24th from 6:30-7:30pm. $20/Only $5 for ECC
Staff/Students. Vintage Oldsmobile cars will be displayed starting at 5:30pm in Parking Lot
C (south). Torrance Citicable will be broadcasting the event.
4) 4th Annual Mother-Daughter Tea with Japanese-inspired theme this year will take place
Saturday, May 10th. Event is already 75% booked.
o Center for Customized Training (CCT) – Maricela Vital:
1) ETP 14-0800 AB118 Alternative & Renewable Fuel & Vehicle Technology Contract:
LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified School District) is being certified and their mechanics are
expected to participate in extensive training. City College of San Francisco will coordinate

training for the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) as well as San Francisco MTA (Municipal
Transportation Agency). City of Bakersfield has expressed interest in participating. Eldon
and Jannet Malig (Cerritos Community College District) have been invited by the American
Public Transportation Association (APTA), based in Washington, D.C., to address
participants at the 2014 Bus and Paratransit Conference, May 5-7, in Kansas City,
Missouri.
2) ETP 13-0125 Two-Year Contract: Esterline Defense Technologies’ Supervisory classes
(2) will end on May 6th. All funds for this contract have been fully allocated.
3) ETP ET14-0217 Two Year Contract (Training Partners: C3, Cerritos, CMTC, Corporate
Training Institute and Quest): A total of 36 active classes are taking place through our
training partners and two additional classes under the CCT. Our marketing outreach is
expanding to include the military sector.
4) Contract Ed: City of Torrance continues with a new series of DDI (Development
Dimensions International) training scheduled through May 19th.
5) Other Activity: Eldon Davidson attended our first Space Tech Expo in Long Beach on April
1-3. The conference was a great opportunity to feature the services of our center. A total
of 70 leads were obtained and are actively being pursued.
Grants – Jennifer Hutcherson:
1) Grant closeout(s) and/or Grant award extension(s): We sent in the final report and
reapplied for the Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students Program. This Nursing
program provides scholarships to increase diversity in health professions. The previous
award was $2,600,000 over 4 years.
2) Grant award notification(s): We signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the
Western Association for College Admission Counseling. They provided El Camino
$10,000 as an augmentation to the grant we received from the Chancellor’s Office to
create transfer agreements with Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
3) An ECC student has been awarded the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in
Gaithersburg, Maryland.
4) Grant proposal submissions(s): The California Career Pathways Trust grant has been
submitted. This is a $6,000,000 grant to create pathways into the healthcare industry.
Partners are El Segundo, Torrance USD, Centinela Valley USD and Inglewood USD, CSU
Dominguez Hills, UCLA, South Bay WIB.
5) Grant proposals(s) in progress and/or planned: Searching for funding for the Women in
Technology Program. Searching for funding for the Childhood Education – Teacher
Resource Room & Super Tutors Program. The Childhood Education Department has
been operating a Teacher Resource Room for students for the past 15 years. This room
houses bookbinders, computers, die cuts, children’s books, reference materials, supplies,
a laminating machine, a textbook loan program and more. It is utilized by over 2,000
students per year. The room also serves as a meeting place for students, study area,
space for students to work together to develop group projects. The highly trained Super
Tutors assist students with their coursework. This program was previously funded by
CTEA (Career Technical Education Act) grant money.
Small Business Development Center (SBDC) – Laura Garinger:
1) The SBDC hosted a Business Resource Breakfast on Friday, April 11, 2014 at the
Hawthorne Memorial Center. There were over 80 attendees present. Topic discussed
was how to increase sales for your business. Mayor Chris Brown was on hand to discuss
small business in Hawthorne.
2) March 27, 2014 LauraLee Garinger was on a panel on campus for Tisa Casas Special
Resource Center students. LauraLee spoke about the free services offered by the SBDC.
Others on the panel were representatives from the Department of Rehabilitation and Social
Security.

3) The census bureau visited the SBDC April 15, 2014 to conduct a workshop on conducting
market research utilizing the thousands of databases created by the census bureau. The
workshop was offered to the advisors and staff of the SBDC.
4) One of our clients, a success story for our center in the past, has been notified by the U.S.
Small Business Administration that he will be receiving an award from Los Angeles Mayor
Garcetti on May 12, 2014. He was nominated by us for recognition by the City of Los
Angeles Mayor as part of Small Business Week, May 12-16. The hours of the event will be
from 9am to noon. The exact location and agenda will be sent to our client and SBDC at a
later date.
5) A few SBDC workshops remaining for the month of April are Business Licenses,
Corporations & LLC’s – April 17 from 3pm-5pm. How to estimate Start-up Costs – April 22
from 3pm-5pm. The Basics of Starting a Business – April 22 from 10:15am-12:15pm.
Export Workshop – April 24 from 3pm-5pm. How to Work Your Cash Flow – April 28 from
4pm-6pm. Grow Your Business with Email & Social Media – April 30 from 10am-12pm.
Workplace Learning Resource Center (WpLRC) – Maryann Cohan:
1) Terminal Island: Welding Contract ongoing to May 30, 2014 with Instructor Henry
Jackson.
2) Parenting 5-year contract awarded to WpLRC. Instructor Bobbie Lanham. Classes began
April 1, 2014.
Metropolitan Detention Center:
3) Parenting on-going. Instructor Theresa Reed.
4) Blueprint for Success. Instructor Theresa Reed.
STCW-95 (Standards for Training Certification and Watchkeeping): We’ve sent out
flyers with our Schedule and Brochure.
5) STCW Class: Full class on April 22-26. Price increase July 1st.
6) Lifeboat Class: Full class on April 8-13.
7) Advanced Fire: PO from Crowley for six students. Foss will give us PO for five students.
Ten plus students waiting for class.
8) Tankerman: Minimum of 5 students needed
9) Medical Provider: Minimum of 5 students needed.
10) Security Awareness for all Seafarers/half day class: Cancelled
11) Security Awareness for Seafarers with Specific Security Duties: Class April 28 with 16
students enrolled.
12) Vessel Security Officer (VSO): April 10, check sent to approve course. Maybe 6-8 weeks
for approval.
13) Effective February 1, 2013 all workers who tend to off-shore rigs must have fire training.
14) Disney Cruise Line: Class will be here May 14-15, 2014.
