People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of flat bed screen printing; prepare a flat bed printing machine for operation; operate a flat bed printing machine; and carry out batch end procedures. Explanatory notes 1 Performance of the elements must comply with the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. 2 The disposal or discharge of dyestuffs, chemicals, wastes, and packaging materials must be carried out according to the requirements of the Resource Management Act 1991. 3 Definitions Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or documented procedures for performing activities including health and safety, operational, environmental, and quality management requirements. They refer to manuals, manufacturer's specification, codes of practice, or policy statements. Product specifications refer to the document which accompanies each manufacturing order. This specifies all of the parameters for production of the yarn batch. This may include the fibre specification, the shade, dye bath parameters, machinery to be used and finishing procedures. Evidence requirements 1.1 Machine sections are identified and described in terms of their function and operation. Range belt, fabric feed and tension system, screens, print head, squeegee, machine controls, edge guide, belt adhesive system. Outcome 2 Prepare a flat bed printing machine for operation. Evidence requirements 2.1 Fabric is identified according to product specifications. 2.2 Screen patterns conform to product specifications. 2.3 Screens are located in machine according to workplace procedures. Range 2.4 screens in specified sequence, screens align with reference marks, screens clean and undamaged. Machine is prepared according to workplace procedures. Range squeegee type and size, print paste at specified screen, printing strokes set, screen to belt gap set, fabric adheres to belt, printing speed set, pressure roller in place, dryer temperature set. 2.5 Test sample is prepared according to workplace procedures. 2.6 Test sample is assessed and machine adjustments made to achieve product specifications. Range pattern alignment, shade. Outcome 3 Operate a flat bed printing machine. Evidence requirements 3.1 Machine is operated in accordance with workplace procedures. 3.2 Fabric is printed according to workplace procedures. Outcome 4 Carry out batch end procedures. Evidence requirements 4.1 Machine is cleaned according to workplace procedures. Range 4.2 squeegees removed and cleaned, screen clean and dry, machine and work area clean. Screens are inspected and stored according to workplace procedures. This unit standard is expiring.
