People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of carousel printing; prepare for printing; apply print to garments; and carry out batch end procedures. Classification Textiles Manufacture > Textile Dyeing and Finishing Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Performance of the elements must comply with the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. 2 The disposal or discharge of dyestuffs, chemicals, wastes, and packaging materials will be carried out according to the requirements of the Resource Management Act 1991. 3 Carousel printing is also known as placement printing. 4 Definitions Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or documented procedures for performing activities including health and safety, operational, environmental and quality management requirements. They refer to manuals, manufacturer's specification, codes of practice, or policy statements. Product specifications refer to the document which accompanies each manufacturing order. This specifies all of the parameters for production of the yarn batch. This may include the fibre specification, the shade, dye bath parameters, machinery to be used and finishing procedures. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of carousel printing. Evidence requirements 1.1 Machine sections and equipment are identified and described in terms of function and operation. Inks, pigments, dyes, and chemicals used in the workplace are described in terms of their function and use. Outcome 2 Prepare for printing. Evidence requirements 2.1 Screens are prepared according to workplace procedures. 2.2 Screens are examined and any faults repaired according to workplace procedures. 2.3 Screens are located in sequence and orientation according to the design. 2.4 Screens are registered in relation to each other and the print position. 2.5 Paste is selected and prepared according to the design and workplace procedures. 2.6 Pallets are sized in accordance with the substrate to be dyed. Outcome 3 Apply print to garments. Evidence requirements 3.1 Printing process is carried out according to workplace procedures. 3.2 Garments are located on pallets according to workplace procedures. 3.3 Paste is applied to garments according to workplace procedures. Range colour as specified in design, colour sequence as specified for multi-colour designs, flashing as specified in work instruction, squeegee selected, squeegee pressure maintained. 3.4 Screen breakdown and/or pin holes are identified and action taken according to workplace procedures. 3.5 Printed garments are removed from pallets according to workplace procedures. Range 3.6 wet paste not touched, garments not marked with unwanted ink or dye. Printed garments are fixed according to workplace procedures. Evidence requirements 4.1 Screens are washed and cleaned according to workplace procedures. 4.2 Machine and work area are clean to prevent contamination. This unit standard is expiring.
