NZQA Expiring unit standard 5415 version 8 Page 1 of 3 Title Prepare a screen for textile printing Level 3 Purpose Credits 18 This unit standard is for people working in the fabric printing industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare a screen for coating; coat a screen with chemical; transfer a pattern from film to screen; and prepare a screen for mounting in printing machine. Classification Textiles Manufacture > Textile Dyeing and Finishing Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Competence must be demonstrated on the type of screen used in the workplace. 2 Performance of the elements must comply with the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. 3 Definitions Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or documented procedures for performing activities including health and safety, operational, environmental, and quality management requirements. They refer to manuals, manufacturer's specification, codes of practice, or policy statements. Product specifications refer to the document which accompanies each manufacturing order. This specifies all of the parameters for production of the yarn batch. This may include the fibre specification, the shade, dye bath parameters, machinery to be used and finishing procedures. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Prepare a screen for coating. Evidence requirements 1.1 Screen mesh is selected according to product specifications and workplace procedures. 1.2 Frame is prepared according to workplace procedures. Outcome 2 Coat a screen with chemical. Evidence requirements 2.1 Chemicals are measured and mixed according to the product specifications. Range 2.2 Screen and area are prepared for chemical application according to workplace procedures. Range 2.3 containers clean, quantities calculated. screen and area clean and free of dust, screen mounted and aligned. Screen coating is in accordance with workplace procedures. Range coating is even, dried. Outcome 3 Transfer a pattern from film to screen. Evidence requirements 3.1 Pattern conforms to product specifications. 3.2 Pattern location on screen meets product specifications and is in accordance with workplace procedures. Range pattern orientation, reference marks aligned. 3.3 Screen and film are exposed to ultra violet light for specified time. 3.4 Wash off and curing meets workplace requirements. Range water pressure adjusted, drying temperature maintained. Outcome 4 Prepare a screen for mounting in printing machine. Evidence requirements 4.1 Blemishes are identified and repaired. 4.2 Screen is mounted according to machine requirements.
