This unit standard is for people working in the dyeing and
finishing industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate
knowledge of the boarding and steaming process; prepare a
boarding and steaming machine to process socks; process
socks on a boarding and steaming machine; and carry out
batch end procedures.

Explanatory notes
1
Competence must be shown on the type of press in the workplace and over the full
range of socks processed in the workplace.

Performance of the elements must comply with the Health and Safety in Employment
Act 1992

Definition
Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or documented procedures for performing
activities including health and safety, operational, environmental and quality
management requirements. They refer to manuals, manufacturer's specification,
codes of practice, or policy statements.

Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of the boarding and steaming process.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Boarding and steaming of socks is described in terms of the reasons for
carrying out the process.
1.2
Machine sections and associated equipment are described in terms of their
function and operation.

Outcome 2
Prepare a boarding and steaming machine to process socks.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Machine is emptied and cleaned to prevent contamination from the previous
batch.
2.2
Machine is prepared and operated according to workplace procedures.

Outcome 3
Process socks on a boarding and steaming machine.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Alignment of sock meets workplace procedures.
3.2
Faults in socks are identified.
Range

moisture content at exit.
3.3
Machine operating conditions are maintained in accordance with workplace
procedures.
3.4
Socks are removed and handled according to workplace procedures.
3.5
Records are kept according to workplace procedures.
