This unit standard is for people working in the dyeing and
finishing industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate
knowledge of boarding and steaming stockings and tights;
prepare a boarding and steaming machine to steam stockings
and tights; process stockings and tights on a boarding and
steaming machine; and carry out batch end procedures.

Explanatory notes
1
Competence must be shown on the type of equipment used in the workplace and
over the full range of stockings and tights processed in the workplace.

Performance of the elements must comply with the Health and Safety in Employment
Act 1992.

Definition
Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or documented procedures for performing
activities including health and safety, operational, environmental and quality
management requirements. They refer to manuals, manufacturer's specification,
codes of practice, or policy statements.

Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of boarding and steaming stockings and tights.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Boarding and steaming of stockings and tights is described in terms of the
reasons for carrying out the process.

Machine sections and associated equipment are described in terms of their
function and operation.

Outcome 2
Prepare a boarding and steaming machine to steam stockings and tights.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Machine is emptied and cleaned to prevent contamination from the previous
batch.
2.2
Machine is prepared and operated according to workplace procedures.

set, steam chamber and boards pre-heated.
Outcome 3
Process stockings and tights on a boarding and steaming machine.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Alignment of stockings and tights is in accordance with workplace procedures.
3.2
Faults in stockings and tights are identified.
Range
knitting faults, dye faults, sizing, moisture content at start, moisture
content at end.
3.3
Machine operating conditions are maintained according to process
requirements.
3.4
Stockings and tights are removed from the machine and handled according to
workplace procedures.
3.5
Records are kept according to workplace procedures.

Carry out batch end procedures.
