People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: pretannage stages used in hide leather manufacture; chemical mechanism of pretannage stages; pretannage hide and skin characteristics; and potential damage associated with incorrect pretannage processing. Pretannage machinery is described in terms of mechanical principle and function. Credit Merit two, which may include but are not limited to any of – flesher, splitter, drum, processor. plus one other. Evidence requirements 2.1 Chemical mechanism of pretannage processes is described in terms of chemical interaction with skin system and modifications to skin system achieved. Credit Merit 2.2 three of the following – soaking, unhairing, liming, deliming, bating, pickling. plus two others. Process control of pretannage chemistry is described in terms of standard tannery practice. Credit Merit three of the following – soaking, unhairing, liming, deliming, bating, pickling. plus two others. Outcome 3 Demonstrate knowledge of pretannage hide and skin characteristics. Evidence requirements 3.1 Pretannage hide and skin characteristics are described in terms of alterations to hide that are relevant to leather qualities. Credit Merit Outcome 4 three of the following – flatness, opening up, looseness, grain cleanliness, thermal stability. plus one other. This unit standard is expiring Demonstrate knowledge of potential damage associated with incorrect pretannage processing. Evidence requirements 4.1 Potential damage arising from incorrect pretannage processing are described in terms of faults in leather.
