People credited with this unit standard are able to draw, layout, and paint-in letters in Helvetica, Roman, Script and Freestyle in the horizontal and vertical plane to a pre-commercial level. Classification Graphic Arts > Signmaking Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 All work practices shall meet the requirements of relevant legislation, including Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991, and the requirements of industry codes of practice and documented enterprise procedures in respect to health, safety, and environmental matters. 2 Definitions Company practices refer to behavioural norms or procedures generally accepted, but not necessarily documented, within the company. Pre-commercial means to a standard not yet marketable commercially. 3 Range Letters include but are not limited to – Helvetica, Roman, Script, Freestyle; drawn – laid out and painted-in in the horizontal and vertical plane to a precommercial level. Evidence requirements 1.1 Characteristics of each type face are identified. 1.2 Letters are constructed accurately and legibly and all calculations are completed accurately. 1.3 Letters are executed in the type face specified with sharp, neat edges, and smoothly drawn inner and outer curves. Outcome 2 Layout letters. Evidence requirements 2.1 Principles of letter spacing are applied. Range 2.2 includes but is not limited to – optical, proportion. Letters are grouped, expanded and condensed to meet specifications. Outcome 3 Paint-in letters. Evidence requirements 3.1 Brushes and paint are selected according to task being undertaken. 3.2 Brush control is demonstrated throughout.
