People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: miscellaneous tanning agents used in leather manufacture; mechanisms of miscellaneous tannages; miscellaneous tannage practices; and miscellaneous tanned leather characteristics. Evidence requirements 2.1 Mechanisms of miscellaneous tannages are described in terms of the interaction of the reagent with the skin system. Credit Merit two of the following – aldehyde, cod oil, syntan, zirconium. plus one other. Outcome 3 Demonstrate knowledge of miscellaneous tannage practices. Evidence requirements 3.1 Miscellaneous tannages are described in terms of process techniques and conditions used in the tannery. Credit Merit 3.2 one of – aldehyde, oxazolidine, THPS, syntan, and one of – aluminium, titanium, zirconium. plus one from each group. The description identifies oil tannage process used to produce finished chamois leather from full substance pickled sheep pelts in terms of process techniques and conditions used in the tannery.
