Purpose
This unit standard is for supervisors or managers in the
automotive industry. People credited with this unit standard are
able to control the use of material, plant, and equipment in an
automotive workplace, and manage maintenance requirements
of material, plant, and equipment.

Explanatory notes
1
The following legislation, regulations, and their amendments are required to be
consulted and followed where applicable:
– Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act, 1996
– Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992
– Resource Management Act, 1991
– Local Body Regulations.

Reference to company policy means that the standard must comply with any policies,
procedures, and requirements of the company involved, and the ethical codes of
relevant professional management organisations.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Plan and control the use of material, plant, and equipment in an automotive workplace.
Evidence requirements
1.1
An inventory of existing material, plant, and equipment is completed detailing
type, number, purpose, condition, and current use.
1.2
The value of material, plant, and equipment to the workplace operation is
determined by comparing capital value, manufacturer’s intended use, actual
and future use, and chargeable costs.
1.3
A decision is made to maintain, replace, sell, or dispose of existing material,
plant, and equipment based on company requirements and economic viability to
the overall operation of the workplace.

1.4
A planned maintenance programme is put in place to ensure all plant and
equipment operate as intended by the manufacturer in an efficient and accurate
manner.
1.5
Provision of urgent and necessary maintenance, preventative maintenance, and
back-up service are obtained according to company policy.
1.6
Safe, secure, and protected storage conditions ensure the preservation of
material, plant, and equipment from deterioration, wastage, and damage.
1.7
Training is arranged for staff in the use of plant and equipment to ensure their
correct and efficient use, and to maintain safe working practices.

Manage maintenance requirements of material, plant, and equipment.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Material supplies are arranged to be made available in adequate quantity and
quality as and when required for workplace operations.

2.2
Records are kept on the use and condition of material, plant, and equipment to
ensure operating efficiency is maintained.
2.3
Inventory levels of materials are monitored on a continuing basis to ensure
levels meet company requirements.
2.4
Maintenance of plant and equipment is supervised to ensure effective and
efficient use according to work requirements.

Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, or
an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can
report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading
to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
