KINDER NEWS 1/29/2016 WHAT’S NEW? Dates & Reminders: We have been practicing our thinking through retelling and making connections. These strategies help us remember the important details of a fiction text, understand what is happening & identify how characters are feeling throughout the story. We will continue to practice using these strategies as we read in our small groups. I sent home a Reading Checklist that also included your child’s reading level so you can continue to support your kinder at home on their reading journey! Feb. 3 – Book Orders Due Feb. 5 – 100th Day!! Feb. 11 – Early Release & Valentine’s Day Party Feb. 12 & 15 – No School * 100th Day Cape, directions were sent home – please let me know if you need a new one. They are due on Feb. 5th. * Valentine’s Day parties are coming up on February 11th! The Spencer Loomis PTO will once again be providing all food items for the parties while keeping with the district procedures which require that all foods provided at parties be store bought, with labels intact. To ensure a safe and fun time is had by all, we kindly ask parents to refrain from sending any additional food items into the classroom. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation! * In preparing for Valentine’s Day, if you are going to send in cards, please make sure there is one for each student. The AM has 21 friends and the PM has 17 friends. Please do not write individual names on each card. Reading: Reading is THINKING!! Phonics: Our readers have been having fun playing with words – phoneme manipulation. This is the ability to work with individual sounds (beginning, vowel and ending) in words to make new words. Children who can think about and manipulate phonemes become better readers and spellers. We are rockin’ this new skill – yay us!! Writing: We have taken a small break from Writer’s Workshop to spend some time on sentences; learning about the structure and rules of a sentence and also practicing making and writing sentences. We are finishing up our time working on this important skills and we will be moving on to “How To” writing. Math: The kinders worked hard on a variety of graphs and even made their own! We are able to create a question, collect our data and look at the data to compare it. Additional: * Words Their Way: “word sorts”, We are working on individual sorts, to reinforce specific skills – short vowels, blends, digraphs or long vowels. * Snappy Words: Take some time to practice these words with your child to help build fluency in reading & writing... (a, and, I, me, you, the, my, is, to go, can, we, he, she, at, be, no, it, like, am, play, on, in, yes, did, for, see, that) * Science: We are exploring Earth Science – weather. * Social Studies: We are discussing Friends with a variety of texts and activities.
