POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: FLSA STATUS: Safety Specialist Exempt CATEGORY: GRADE: Professional B JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for assisting in the coordination of the Risk Management and Safety Office activities associated with the District’s Safety Program. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: YEARLY PERCENT OF TIME 20% 1. Provide support to the Risk Manager in developing, implementing, administering, and evaluating the District’s Safety Program; ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations and ensure best practices for the College. 2. Assist with all aspects of the Volunteer Safety Corps program to include recruiting, helping with safety drills, training, tracking campus locations, and coordinating College safety actions with the Police Department. 20% 3. Establish recordkeeping methods that monitor the Hazardous Communication Program to include updating and maintaining chemical records. Assist in integrating the Globally Harmonizing System to the College. 15% 4. Assist with the research, preparation, and presentation of employee safety training programs to include creation of training materials. Assist in promoting safety in the workplace. 10% 5. Assist in keeping College Safety Manual, Employee Handbook, College procedures and printed materials current. 10% 6. Assist Risk Manager with safety walkthroughs and inspections throughout the College. Assist in investigating and documenting accidents and safety complaints or violations. 10% 7. Research current injury trends to identify needed training subjects. Responsible for running reports. 5% 8. Respond to questions; coordinate follow-up responses; order, receive, and distribute safety materials and equipment. 5% 9. EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years related experience. CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES: Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and insurable by the district’s auto liability insurance carrier. SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Skills/Abilities: Strong interpersonal/communications skills (oral and written). Strong organizational skills. Good computer skills. Must maintain confidentiality of work related information and materials. Must establish and maintain effective working relationships. Excellent customer service skills. Use document imaging technology. Ability to apply knowledge of federal, state, and local laws related to safety. Ability to interpret and apply regulatory guidelines. Effective problem solving skills in a variety of circumstances. 2. Equipment Used: Personal Computer, fax, telephone, copier, media equipment, and other equipment associated with an office, classroom, and conference room environments. 3. Software Used: A variety of word-processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, and presentation software.
