POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: FLSA STATUS: Benefits Specialist Exempt CATEGORY: GRADE: Professional B JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for assisting in the coordination of personnel and departmental activities associated with employee benefits, as well as, processing personnel/payroll related paperwork. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: YEARLY PERCENT OF TIME 20% 1. Coordinate personnel functions with payroll activities; explain and interpret departmental programs, college policies and procedures, state laws and regulations; provide information from complex rules and regulations. 2. Prepare and process Worker’s Compensation claims in a timely manner and monitor loss time from work. 15% 3. Research and review employee eligibility status for professional development leaves, leave without pay, and family and medical leaves; out process retirees; prepare monthly board agenda items for leaves and retirements; and calculate insurance premiums, prepare billings, collect monies and remit monies. 15% 4. Code documents from signed authorizations; input data into multiple databases; calculate financial adjustments and ensure entry to payroll system; assist with annual benefit summer enrollment period; and disseminate correspondence documents and briefing materials. 15% 5. Review tuition reimbursement applications; calculate and initiate benefit payment; provide and process death and disability claims; prepare and respond to unemployment claims, medical support orders, and Medicare coordination of benefits. 15% 6. Maintain vendor certification and information for approved 403(b) pension providers; prepare monthly and annual federal and state reports. 10% 7. Operate office machines, such as computer terminals, typewriter, etc; provide notary services; assist with the development and establishment of office routines. 10% REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Manger, Employee Benefits ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree. Skills/Abilities: Ability to plan and organize multiple work activities to effectively meet deadlines and effective communications skills oral and written. 2. Equipment Used: Personal Computer and other equipment associated with an office environment. 3. Software Used: A variety of spreadsheet, word-processing, database, e-mail, and presentation software. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Duties require little physical effort in work with light (up to 10lbs), easy to handle materials. Duties performed causes light fatigue of eyes, fingers, or other faculties due to long periods of standing, sitting, and/or repetitive motion. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Alternative or combined skills in understanding, counseling, and/or influencing people are important in achieving job objectives, causing action, understanding others, or changing behavior; and, skills of persuasiveness or assertiveness, as well as sensitivity to the point of view of others.
