2 1 Scarlet and Gray Newsletter April 4th to 8th, 2016 Volume 19, Issue 30 N Tuesday Monday We wrote our ‘weekend news’. We greeted classmates, said the pledge of allegiance, said our class promise and did calendar. We sang our ‘Days’ and ‘Months’ songs, subitized to 1-12 dots, read our popcorn words, did our ABC chart, sang our vowel song and reviewed our habits of thinkers. We practiced for our upcoming program. Our kindergartner of the week shared his/her poster and we wrote a sentence about him/her using interactive writing. We learned our new popcorn word ‘am’ and did rainbow writing of it. We used our word wall to locate and record all of the one-letter words. We were introduced to our new poem ‘Traffic Lights’, and found the popcorn words in it. We did shared reading. We watched the third of five brief videos about a growth mindset. We read The Sun is My Favorite Star. We did literacy workshop. Wednesday We did rainbow writing of the numerals 11-15. We greeted one another, sang ‘Grand Old Flag’, said our class promise and did calendar. We counted to 100 by fives and tens and read our popcorn words. We did ‘Action Alphabet’ and practiced for our program. We reviewed the habits of thinkers. Our kindergartner of the week brought in something for us to estimate and we wrote a sentence about him/her using interactive writing. We wrote the three-letter words from the popcorn word wall. We watched the fourth video on growth mindset. We read Shortcut by our new April author, Donald Crews. We wrote as many words as we could in ten minutes in a word spree. We did shared reading and read and Kinds of Weather, Measuring Weather and Check the Weather. We did a Time for Kids – Celebrate Spring. We had recess. We had literacy workshop. We identified daytime and nighttime activities and drew a picture of day and night. We visited the art room and did a creativity tour with Mrs. Cowan. We greeted friends, sang My Country ‘Tis of Thee, said our class promise and did calendar. We counted to 100 by ones and read our popcorn words. We did our ABC charts with digraphs and reviewed the habits of thinkers. We practiced for our program. Our kindergartner of the week shared a science image and we wrote a sentence about him/her using interactive writing. We did speedwriting of our popcorn word. We used our word wall to write all of the two-letter words we know. We read Above Me, Look Up! and What’s In the Sky? We had recess. We did shared reading and read Sunshine Makes the Season. We practiced writing numerals 1-20. Thursday We did rainbow writing of the numerals 16-20, greeted classmates, sang ‘America the Beautiful’, said our class promise and did calendar. We counted backwards from 20, subitized ten frames and read our popcorn words. We did our blend cards and reviewed habits of thinkers. We practiced for our program. Our kindergartner of the week shared something for social studies and we wrote a sentence about him/her using interactive writing. Then we each wrote our own sentence about him/her. We did shared reading and read Weather. We read, highlighted the popcorn words in and illustrated our poem. We read Getting Around and Using Tools. We did a Time for Kids – Coolest New Inventions. We wrote the four-letter words from the popcorn word wall. We had recess. The AM class had library. We did Literacy Workshop. Friday We practiced writing our first and last name in D’Nealian handwriting. We greeted each other, said the pledge of allegiance and our class pledge and did calendar. We counted on from three different numbers, read our popcorn words, reviewed our habits of thinkers and practiced for our program. We had Family Friday. We highlighted the popcorn words in and read ‘We Are’. We read Rain by Donald Crews. We did shared reading and read It’s Raining and A Walk in the Rain and determined which was fiction and non-fiction. We did a science experiment where we ‘made’ rain and we wrote either a fiction or non-fiction piece about rain. The morning class had recess.The afternoon class had library. We read Push or Pull? and Bear on a Bike. We did a Time for Kids – The Coolest Inventions. We did addition using a number line.
