Funding Source: 100 ☐ ✔ General ☐ Categorical ☐ Grant Grant name: % % % Justification: Why is this position necessary? In the last few years, faculty and staff across campus have made significant efforts to strengthen transitions between high school and community college and build programs that support student success. For these efforts to be successful, staff support is needed. What educational programs or institutional purposes does this position support? How does the request relate specifically to your Program Review, the College’s Strategic Plan, and/or Accreditation Recommendations? The position directly supports the strategic plan goal by providing support to maintain websites, process paperwork, and handle other logistics for programs that clarify pathways and provide information and support to students. These programs include First Year Experience, Passion and Purpose, Change It Now, the garden, High School In-reach/outreach, and Pathways. Although each of them has requested their own staff support, many of their efforts overlap and could be supported by a centralized structure. In relation to whether the position should be and IA II or IA III, given that the position would be shared, maximum flexibility is essential. An Instructional Assistant III position allows for the possibility of support around hiring paperwork, payroll, data tracking, and supervision of student assistants as the program grows, without which our ability to scale is limited. The ability to supervise student assistants is particularly vital to maintaining the wide number of student leadership initiatives associated with these programs, initiatives that are in significant need of structure. Where will the individual work? To whom will the person report? Are there any special equipment/facilities needs to be considered? The position would be housed in the Collaborative Projects area in building 100 which was designed as a central space for students to connect to programs and collaborate. Without staff, the area will remain inaccessible to the public and to most students. What is the consequence of not funding this position? As mentioned above, without staff support the college will not be able to institutionalize innovative programs that have brought student and academic services together to support students to completion. Further progress toward our goals is currently stunted as faculty do not have support for maintaining individual websites, generating materials, offering activities, and processing paperwork. Additionally, the Collaborative Projects space will remain unopened with staffing. What alternative approaches have been considered in meeting the programmatic demands of this request? The campus cobbled together support using faculty time and this has lead to further challenges. How will the campus community (students, staff, faculty, and community) be positively impacted by filling this position? Students will be supported in their educational goals with space to meet, communities to join, and educational opportunities in which to participate. The community will have access to a centralized area and communication with High Schools will dramatically improve as they have access to needed web resources, such as pathway maps and applications and information on how to access resources. Chabot students who work in High School outreach programs will also have access to the resources they need to assist students in their transition to college. Our High Schools have been requesting access to resources for some time. What other personnel currently provide support to this program and these students? Faculty including Sean McFarland, Deonne Kunkel, Carmen Johnson, Lynn Klein, Donna Gibson and William Hanson and many others have been building the programs without needed staff support in the STEM center and Collaborative Projects area.
