Learning Connection Division/Unit: Position Title Requested: Program Director-Learning Connection Request Number (i.e., 1 + # of times position requested, but not granted, in past five program reviews): 1 Please indicate if this is a request for/to: ☐ Fill a currently vacant position (Must attach District job description; see Classified Prioritization Chair for assistance.) hours per week months per year ☐ Increase of an existing position (Must attach District job description; see Classified Prioritization Chair for assistance.) from: ☐ 9, ☐ 10, ☐ 11 month to: ☐ 10, ☐ 11, ☐ 12 month from: % to: % ☐ New position (Must attach proposed job description; see Classified Prioritization Chair for assistance.) 12 40 hours per week months per year ■ Estimate Increase / Proposed Annual Salary Cost: (assume step 1 for vacant position) $ ??? Note: total cost of position will include salary + benefits. Funding Source: 100 % ☐ ✔ General ☐ Categorical % ☐ Grant % Grant name: Justification: Why is this position necessary? The Learning Connection needs stable, full-time, twelve-month leadership. Since learning support services moved from student services to academic services a faculty member has received reassigned time (between 7.5-9 CAH) to perform duties that constitute a full-time position. The center needs a fulltime, twelve-month Director located on site to manage day-to-day operations. Some duties would include: supervision of support staff, hiring/supervision of student workers(100+ per semester), SAO development/reporting, program development, and, working with Dean of Academic Pathways, budget monitoring/reporting. THERE IS NO CLASS SPECIFICATION ON COLLEGE WEBSITE-SEE PROGRAM DIRECTOR/EDUCATIONAL TALENT SEARCH FOR SIMILAR POSITION. What educational programs or institutional purposes does this position support? How does the request relate specifically to your Program Review, the College’s Strategic Plan, and/or Accreditation Recommendations? This position would support instructional faculty and students by maintaining a strong learning support program. With stable leadership we can grow the program and improve our processes to better serve students and instructors. When looking at the supplemental goals chart in our 2016-17 Program Review it is apparent that one instructor with partial reassigned time cannot effectively achieve our ambitious agenda. Where will the individual work? To whom will the person report? Are there any special equipment/facilities needs to be considered? In the Learning Connection and will report to the Dean of Academic Pathways and Student Success. What is the consequence of not funding this position? The center will not be able to expand services nor implement new initiatives effectively. If part-time faculty leadership continues the center will barely manage to maintain services. There will continue to be a leadership void during Summer session. What alternative approaches have been considered in meeting the programmatic demands of this request? Day-to-day operations are managed by the LC Admin Assistant whose decision-making responsibilities are limited by class specification duties. The faculty coordinator carries a part-time teaching load in addition to coordination responsibilities. With the new, larger space in Building 100 this approach has proved to be lacking. We now how have adequate space to support our students academically. It is time to provide the leadership this program needs. How will the campus community (students, staff, faculty, and community) be positively impacted by filling this position? There will be a full-time point person for Learning Connection who can make decisions that positively impact student learning and support instructors seeking supplemental academic interventions for their students. The LC will have a full-time, dedicated advocate on shared governance committees. What other personnel currently provide support to this program and these students? One faculty coordinator with 9 CAH reassigned time, 1 FTE Admin. Assistant, .5 FTE Instructional Assistant, .5 temporary Professional Expert. 1 FTE IA was approved via the Classified Prioritization process but position has not been posted.
