This week students used the laptops in class to play interactive online games to learn and reinforce their knowledge and recall of the state locations and their capitals. Students also have a myriad of activities and handouts available in the classroom to help them practice and memorize this information. Memos on Math Students are practicing adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators. Our test for this is Wednesday. We’ll then explore adding and subtracting mixed numbers. We will also take a final drill on +, -, and x (5/24-25) for those who haven’t yet reached the exit expectation of 90%. This does affect a student’s final grade in math. Heads Up! As the weather warms and Eco looms, in addition to the prospect of summer, I find some students starting to really lose focus and pile up the pink slips. We’ve talked in the classroom about the need to finish strong, but your support with this is crucial. We have a lot of fun activities coming up which are a privilege, not a right; students whose work isn’t finished may not be able to participate. Lots About Language Arts Language: Students wrote an essay on an assigned Native American culture practicing the expository skills taught and reviewed this year. I am busy (very busy ) grading Animal Reports. You’ll be amazed at how much students have learned about writing a research report! These will be enclosed in next week’s Friday folder! Reading: We begin reading the novel Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare Monday. It ties in nicely with westward expansion and our studies of Native American cultures and conflicts. Students received information for their final book report and project last week. These are Wednesday, 5/23, and will be shared in the classroom at that time. No late assignments will be accepted. Book logs are also due at that time.
