Heath, Safety & Environment (HSE) Solutions n Software and Consulting Power Generation and Distribution (Offshore) R&D Highlight: The Subsea Power Grid – A Virtual Tour Improve offshore economics through enhanced subsea power distribution Operators leave significant amounts of value behind in offshore environments, despite the elevated costs and risks associated with drilling 5,000 to 7,000 meters into the earth – beyond the 2,000 to 3,000 meters between the ocean floor and the surface. Subsea processing facilities are critical to boosting recovery. They consist of multiple components, including pumps and compressors, all of which require power. Currently, however, there are limited means to transmit power underwater over long distances. Typically today, single power feeders are run from topside facilities, to each specific consumer on the seafloor. These solutions add complexity and cost to operations; in addition, they are simply not viable options for long step-outs, or for situations that require relatively high power output or a high number of power consumers. Already a premier provider of subsea solutions to the oil and gas industry, Siemens is in the advanced stages of developing a subsea power grid, designed to optimize distribution of power to subsea processing equipment, which in turn plays an increasingly critical role in boosting production in deepwater environments. The groundbreaking technology represents a radical departure from more conventional approaches to subsea power distribution, such as running single power feeders from land or placing power equipment on floating facilities. It holds the potential to make previously unrecoverable hydrocarbon resources recoverable. This “virtual reality” presentation will focus on the challenges inherent in supplying subsea components with power. It will also touch on the critical role connectors and associated expertise play in subsea power supply and on, the objectives and progress to date of the Subsea Power Grid project. Espen Bostadloekken, espen.bostadloekken@siemens.com Innovations in Offshore Drilling: Power and Drive Systems Enhance efficiency and minimize environmental impact, while reducing surface footprint in space-constrained environments, with innovative power and drive systems High rig rates, increasingly stringent environmental regulations, and space constraints are among the challenges that offshore operators contend with – on a daily basis. Siemens mitigates these challenges through an assortment of highly innovative technologies. These include the DP closed-ring power system and the BlueDrive CLEAN offshore drive system. Our fault-tolerant DP closed-ring power system for mobile offshore drilling units improves availability of the power supply to vital consumers like drilling and thruster drives. It minimizes the number of engines online, thereby optimizing operational performance. Specific advantages of its unique design include reduced fuel consumption and maintenance, lower emissions, and diesel engines that run close to their optimum load level. The highly compact BlueDrive CLEAN (compact low-emission adaptive network) offshore drive system is widely used in the marine and offshore oil & gas industries. Applications include drilling, thrusters, and electrical jacking; regardless of the application, BlueDrive CLEAN delivers field-proven dependability and a space-saving design. Core components of both our DP closed-ring power system and our BlueDrive CLEAN use standard and field-proven equipment; parts and servicing are available worldwide. The all-in-one user interface provides fast and easy access to all required information, and various levels of operator training optimize grid operation throughout system lifetime. Scenario analysis using real-time simulation improves grid operation. Rick Preston, richard.preston@siemens.com HIPPS (High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems) Design, Analysis and Justification Prevent Damage and Loss by Protecting Critical Equipment in Upstream and Downstream Applications HIPPS (High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems) provide protection of critical equipment, ranging from high/low pressure interfaces to equipment overpressure scenarios, in upstream and downstream processes – conditions which could result in damage to the plant or the environment, loss of life and financial consequences. To avoid such events, HIPPS systems generally shut down, reduce or divert pressure sources feeding the system that is experiencing overpressure. In cases where overpressure causes a large liquid or vapor relief load being sent to a flare system, the proper HIPPS system can help reduce excessive load on an existing flare system, and eliminate the high costs associated with purchasing new relief devices, resizing existing flare headers, re-rating flare knock out drums or redesigning the flare stack, in addition to the opportunity costs due to loss of operations. The current approach is to design HIPPS systems for flare load reduction as a Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3 Safety Instrumented Function (SIF) or a SIL 2 SIF (depending on the code or company standard being followed). However, instead of following the customary “one size performance fits all approach”, the design could be based upon an IEC 61511 Safety Lifecycle view point to determine the required risk reduction, and thereby choose the appropriately-required SIL. This presentation will discuss current practices; review benefits and drawbacks of SIL selection in these scenarios, and describe the impact on total cost of ownership. Charles Fialkowski, charles.fialkowski@siemens.com Offshore Production Powerful FPSO Solutions: A Virtual Tour Improve project execution and operational performance through Siemens’ comprehensive slate of offerings for FPSOs Siemens is a major global provider of integrated solutions for floating storage, production and offloading (FPSO) vessels; our multi-package offering includes electrification, instrumentation/control, and telecommunication (EICT) solutions; water services; power generation; and compression.
