R&D Highlight:
The Subsea Power Grid –
A Virtual Tour
Improve offshore economics through
enhanced subsea power distribution
Operators leave significant amounts of value
behind in offshore environments, despite the
elevated costs and risks associated with drilling
5,000 to 7,000 meters into the earth – beyond
the 2,000 to 3,000 meters between the ocean
floor and the surface.
Subsea processing facilities are critical to
boosting recovery. They consist of multiple
components, including pumps and compressors,
all of which require power. Currently, however,
there are limited means to transmit power
underwater over long distances. Typically
today, single power feeders are run from topside
facilities, to each specific consumer on the
seafloor. These solutions add complexity and
cost to operations; in addition, they are simply
not viable options for long step-outs, or for
situations that require relatively high power
output or a high number of power consumers.
Already a premier provider of subsea solutions
to the oil and gas industry, Siemens is in the
advanced stages of developing a subsea power
grid, designed to optimize distribution of power
to subsea processing equipment, which in turn
plays an increasingly critical role in boosting
production in deepwater environments. The
groundbreaking technology represents a radical
departure from more conventional approaches
to subsea power distribution, such as running
single power feeders from land or placing
power equipment on floating facilities. It holds
the potential to make previously unrecoverable
hydrocarbon resources recoverable.
This “virtual reality” presentation will focus
on the challenges inherent in supplying subsea
components with power. It will also touch
on the critical role connectors and associated
expertise play in subsea power supply and on,
the objectives and progress to date of the
Subsea Power Grid project.

Innovations in
Offshore Drilling:
Power and Drive Systems
Enhance efficiency and minimize environmental impact, while reducing surface footprint in space-constrained environments,
with innovative power and drive systems
High rig rates, increasingly stringent environmental regulations, and space constraints are
among the challenges that offshore operators
contend with – on a daily basis. Siemens mitigates these challenges through an assortment
of highly innovative technologies. These include
the DP closed-ring power system and the
BlueDrive CLEAN offshore drive system.
Our fault-tolerant DP closed-ring power system
for mobile offshore drilling units improves availability of the power supply to vital consumers
like drilling and thruster drives. It minimizes the
number of engines online, thereby optimizing
operational performance. Specific advantages
of its unique design include reduced fuel consumption and maintenance, lower emissions,
and diesel engines that run close to their
optimum load level.
The highly compact BlueDrive CLEAN (compact
low-emission adaptive network) offshore drive
system is widely used in the marine and offshore oil & gas industries. Applications include
drilling, thrusters, and electrical jacking; regardless of the application, BlueDrive CLEAN delivers
field-proven dependability and a space-saving
design.
Core components of both our DP closed-ring
power system and our BlueDrive CLEAN use
standard and field-proven equipment; parts
and servicing are available worldwide.

E-Houses & Modules:
One-Stop, Plug & Play
Modularized Solutions
Reduce cost, risk, and time on complex

Why buy from multiple equipment suppliers
when you can purchase a fully integrated
module from just one? Siemens answers the
industry’s need for one-stop modularized
solutions when it comes to purchasing electrical
substations, power generation, and process gas
compression equipment, including automation
systems, drives, and switchgear, among other
components. Tailored to the requirements of
your operation, these fully integrated, single-lift
modularized packages are manufactured offsite and delivered as plug & play systems. This
presentation will focus on the net benefits of
this Siemens’ solution, which include enhanced
efficiency, reduced cost, and minimized risk.

Jorge Tropa,
jorge.tropa@siemens.com
The requirements for components on Floating
Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO)
vessels are extremely demanding. Siemens gas
turbines – generally in the range of 3 MW to
66 MW – are commonly used on FPSOs for
power packages as mechanical drives and for
electrical power generation. Their small footprint allows for quick installation of the pretested modules, and they offer excellent
power-to-weight-ratios. In addition, Siemens
gas turbines are designed for core exchange
which reduces on-site maintenance requirements and provides outstanding availability,
proven in FPSO applications. Depending upon
the application, Siemens gas turbines can be
operated on a wide variety of fuels, including
those with high H2S, crude, or heavy fuel oils
using Dry Low Emission technology for low
level NOx emissions.
This presentation will focus on Siemens gas
turbines designed to operate on crude oil
fuels, including heavy crude oil, as well as
those designed as mechanical drives for water
injection pumps. A number of other examples
in varying applications will also be presented.

Heath, Safety & Environment (HSE) Solutions
island conditions and selects the necessary
operation mode, alleviating concerns about
power import control and stable frequency/
voltage in island mode. The all-in-one user
interface provides fast and easy access to all
required information, and various levels of
operator training optimize grid operation
throughout system lifetime. Scenario analysis
using real-time simulation improves grid
operation.

HIPPS (High Integrity Pressure
Protection Systems) Design,
Analysis and Justification
Prevent Damage and Loss by Protecting
Critical Equipment in Upstream and
Downstream Applications
HIPPS (High Integrity Pressure Protection
Systems) provide protection of critical equipment, ranging from high/low pressure interfaces to equipment overpressure scenarios,
in upstream and downstream processes –
conditions which could result in damage to
the plant or the environment, loss of life and
financial consequences. To avoid such events,
HIPPS systems generally shut down, reduce or
divert pressure sources feeding the system that
is experiencing overpressure. In cases where
overpressure causes a large liquid or vapor
relief load being sent to a flare system, the
proper HIPPS system can help reduce excessive
load on an existing flare system, and eliminate
the high costs associated with purchasing new
relief devices, resizing existing flare headers,
re-rating flare knock out drums or redesigning
the flare stack, in addition to the opportunity
costs due to loss of operations.
The current approach is to design HIPPS
systems for flare load reduction as a Safety
Integrity Level (SIL) 3 Safety Instrumented
Function (SIF) or a SIL 2 SIF (depending on
the code or company standard being followed). However, instead of following the
customary “one size performance fits all
approach”, the design could be based upon
an IEC 61511 Safety Lifecycle view point to
determine the required risk reduction, and
thereby choose the appropriately-required SIL.
This presentation will discuss current practices;
review benefits and drawbacks of SIL selection
in these scenarios, and describe the impact on
total cost of ownership.

The Electrical Variable-Speed
Rack-and-Pinion Jacking
System
Enhancing efficiency on jack-up rigs with
an alternative to conventional hydraulic
systems
Gusto MSC and Siemens have developed an
electrical variable-speed drive jacking system
that can significantly increase the speed of the
jacking process. Its unique diagnostic systems
provide precise data feedback during operation,
which allows optimal speed and torque control
as well as synchronized operation of the legs.
This helps reduce the possibility of mechanical
overstress and wear of the legs, racks, and
pinions – making the need for system overrating
a thing of the past.

High-Performance Gearboxes
for Jack-up Rigs
Improve reliability with field-proven
Flender gearboxes for jack-up rigs
Siemens is one of the world’s largest global
suppliers of industrial gear units. Our portfolio
includes the field-proven Flender gearboxes
for jack-up rigs.
A fixture in exploratory, offshore drilling operations, jack-up rigs consist of a buoyant platform
and movable legs. Once a special vessel tows
the rig into place, the movable legs are lowered
to the seabed to support the platform. In turn,
the platform, which can weigh as much as
6,000 tons, is jacked up vertically to the required
elevation above the water. The gearbox – an
array of helical, planetary gear units connected
by racks and pinions – plays a critical role in
the monumental task of elevating the platform.
With a proven track record, our Flender gearboxes are designed for maximum reliability,
while still offering a highly attractive price-toperformance ratio.

other walnut-shell filter designs. In addition,
the filter’s design helps reduce weight and
footprint and lowers the cost of multiple filtration systems. A new proprietary media offers
the potential for a filter to be able to withstand
significantly higher oil loading and longer
loading durations before requiring a backwash.

The oil and gas industry consumes 0.01% to
0.3% of fresh water in the United States alone
and has spent over US$ 18 billion on produced
water. Transport, storage and recycling of the
water have become big business and water
management is becoming a large sub-sector
of Oil & Gas.
In this presentation case studies of successful
water applications will be presented along
with the pros and cons of various flow technologies. The goal of the presentation is to provide
the user with some insight to the technologies
when selecting flow instrumentation for their
water applications.

Compression
Case Studies in Compressor
Reliability and Efficiency
LNG Plant in China and Pipeline Compressor
Station in Turkey Rely on Siemens Solutions
Gas transportation costs between producer
and consumer countries are an important
factor in the competitiveness of gas supplies.
Whether via pipelines or as liquefied natural
gas (LNG), Siemens’ compressor portfolio
offers flexibility, efficiency and reliability in
gas transport.
Two case studies will be discussed during this
presentation:
•Fixed speed, motor-driven centrifugal compressor trains will be used at the Hangzhou
Zhongtai Cryogenic Technology Corporation
LNG plant in China. The drive and control,
using variable inlet guide vane assemblies,
provide more efficient and reliable operation
than conventional compressor solutions
using throttle valve or speed control.
•Petroleum Pipeline Corporation (BOTAS)
in Turkey uses enhanced Siemens’ pipeline
compressor package technology for increased
efficiency.

Siemens: Proper Selection of
Compressor Trains
Choose the most appropriate compressor
train from your high-pressure oil & gas
application from one of the most extensive
portfolios in the industry
Siemens’ innovative single shaft, vertically split
turbo compressor casing is designed to compress gases of any molecular weight, and is
optimized for those with low molecular weight.
The STC-SV compressor is designed for use
in high pressure applications, covering a discharge pressure range of up to 1,000 bar. All
compressor internals are assembled in a bundle
to allow easy axial removal from the casing
shell without the need to remove process gas
piping. A wide variety of sealing systems (labyrinth seals, carbon ring seals and mechanical
dry gas seals) completes the reliable compressor design.
Additionally, as a leading supplier of key components in midstream projects, Siemens has
rounded out its portfolio by addressing the
demand for aero derivative gas turbines driving compressor trains through the acquisition
of the Rolls-Royce Energy. Originally developed
for use in the aviation industry, Rolls-Royce
Energy’s aero derivative gas turbines are compact, weight-optimized and highly efficient,
making them particularly well-suited for offshore oil platforms where space is limited.
This presentation will discuss these innovative
technologies and will include recommendations for choosing proper compression
equipment.
