HYLAND HEIGHTS E.S. HAWK TALK MARCH NEWS, 2014 Dear Parents & Guardians, Thank you for your patience and understanding over the past few weeks on unusually cold days and unpredictable no-bus days. I understand how frustrating and stressful some of these days have been for families trying to figure out how to get your child/ren from home to school and back, safely. We have greatly appreciated your communication with the school and sharing arrangements for your child, where there has been a change of usual plans, as well as your offers to help in any way. Please be assured, that the staff at Hyland Heights always place student safety and well-being first. The teamwork between home and school has been greatly appreciated. You may be wondering how student learning will be affected by the number of days missed. Please know that teachers will continue to focus on the big ideas of each unit and work diligently to help students achieve their very best and complete requirements for this school year by the end of June. How can students be supported at home? Continue to practice reading every day and focus on math literacy, as well as basic skills. This is an easy and effective way to keep the momentum going and prevent any lag in student focus or work habits. Below are some math games that families can play at home. Can you believe there are less than 100 days left in the school year? Let’s work together to make it successful for everyone! Wishing you a safe and enjoyable March break! Sincerely, D.Heaslip Math Games to Play at Home Do you read with your child every night? Is it a positive experience that creates a love of reading between you and your child? Do you play a fun math game with your child every night? Is it a positive experience that creates a love of math between you and your child? Does your child bring home a library book from school? Does your child bring home a math game from school? Did you answer these questions differently? Do you view reading differently than math? Are you looking for a way to make practicing math skills at home more fun and exciting for your child? There are lots of online computer games and apps that make practicing math skills more engaging for your child. Beginning this month, and from now until June we will be including some math games in our newsletter that you can play at home with your children. Math continues to be a focus at our school and within our board and we hope it will be a focus for you at home as well. 1. Go to https://www.prodigygame.com/Canada/ for a free online Math game that supports Mental Math abilities and builds confidence with problem solving questions. 2. “Race to 10, 50 or 100” Roll the dice and add up each turn. First one to 10, 50 or 100 wins. Multiply the numbers for older students. 3. “Guess my number” Place a sticky note on your child’s back and have them guess the number by asking only yes/no questions (Is it bigger than 500, is it odd/even, etc.) 4. Play dominos, cribbage or yahtzee Send us an email with your favourite math game, so that we can share the word with all our families and send a message to our students, that learning math happens every day all around us. On Monday, March 3rd, our Grade 7 & 8 students will be walking over to Glenbrook Elementary School to see guest author Eric Walters. In addition, on Monday, March 17th, “Freeze DNA” will be visiting Hyland Heights. Freeze DNA is a group of illustrators that teaches the basic fundamentals of drawing comic art. Freeze DNA will be making a presentation to our Grade 3-6 students. Both of these presentations promise to be interesting and educational, and should give our students a glimpse into the life of an author or an illustrator. Speech Competition Congratulations to Avery M in Grade 1, Kali F in Grade 3, and Heather P in Grade 6 who proudly represented Hyland Heights at the Shelburne Legion speech competition this past month. Kali and Heather both placed 3rd in their divisions and all three students are to be commended for the hard work and willingness to share their speech publicly with others. Great news to share and celebrate! The Great Big Crunch Hyland Heights will be participating in The Big Crunch again this year. On Thursday, March 6th at 2:30, our students will enjoy the Big Crunch of an apple supplied by our Breakfast Club. The Big Crunch is a special day that we celebrate healthy eating in communities across Canada. Enjoy your crunch Hyland Heights! Live Free Day Thank you to everyone who participated in our Live Free Day on February 28th and for the donations that came in that will go directly towards purchasing food for the breakfast program at Hyland Heights. Thankyou for your donations of and participation in living free of something to promote awareness of those who live free of basic needs on a daily basis. JK/SK Parents - Learn about your child’s eating and activity habits In March your JK/SK child will bring home a nutrition survey from Public Health called NutriSTEP®. Please take several minutes to fill out the survey and mail it back to Public Health in the postage-paid envelope provided. You could win 1 of 6 gift cards valued at $50 for returning the survey. By filling out the survey, parents can learn about their child’s eating and activity habits. Many parents realize their child’s habits are normal while other parents learn a few things their child could improve on. You can speak to a Public Health nurse about your child’s growth and development.
