Mrs. O’Connell’s Parent Newsletter Week of 1-4-2016 Hello, Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed the break from school. I am looking forward to seeing the children and hearing all of their exciting stories tomorrow. IMPORTANT REMINDERS: Important Dates: January 11th- 4th and 5th grade Play January 12th—School Spelling Bee January 12th- Chick Fila Night 5:00-8:00 January 15—End of 2nd quarter January 15—Pretzel Day This week in School: Reading: We will be reading Island of the Blue Dolphin from our Reading Street book. Skill: Theme and setting. Grammar: Independent and dependent clauses. Writing: The students will be writing about New Year goals. We will also practice how to write a friendly letter. Wordly Wise- We will be working on lesson 7 this week. Lesson 7 pack will be due on Friday. The students have 20 minutes M-TH to work on this during daily 5 in school. If they do not complete the assignment in school it will be homework. Math: We will review fraction skills that we have learned so far before moving on to multiplying and dividing fractions. Science: We are studying body systems. Social Studies: This week’s new states are: Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina Math Expo It is time to start thinking about a Math Expo project. The projects will be due in February! This is not required. This is only for interested students I gave interested students the information packet before Winter break. There is still time if your child is interested. Homework for week of 1-4-2016 Math- Fraction practice Spelling- new spelling words will go home Monday. Spelling test will be on Friday. Reading- read 20 minutes each night. Wordly Wise- Monday- 7A, B, Tuesday, 7C, 7D, Wednesday and Thursday, Narrative.
