HIA 2303, CODING
Course Philosophy and Instructor Requirements
Philosophy: This course is the study of ICD-9-CM. It includes the assignment of code
numbers to diagnoses and procedures.
Instructor Objectives: The instructor’s teaching techniques should ensure that the
students are able to accurately assign ICD-9-CM codes to the following services:
o Diagnoses
o V and E codes
o Signs and Symptoms
o Operations and Procedures
Course Teaching Requirements: The following should be followed by all instructors
teaching this course.
 The guidelines and coding assignments from the ICD-9-CM workbook should be
covered in class for the following sections:
o Basic coding guidelines
o ICD-9-CM Conventions
o Coding Guidelines for Operations and Procedures
o V and E Codes
o Symptoms, Signs, and Ill-Defined Conditions
o Infectious and Parasitic Disease
o Endocrine, Metabolic and Nutritional Diseases
o Mental Disorders
o Diseases of the Blood and Blood-Forming Organs
o Diseases of the Nervous System and Sense Organs
o Diseases of the Respiratory System
o Diseases of the Digestive System
o Diseases of the Genitourinary System
o Diseases of the Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue
o Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System and Connective Tissue
o Complications of Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Puerperium
o Abortion and Ectopic Pregnancy
o Congenital Anomalies
o Perinatal Conditions
o Diseases of the Circulatory System
o Neoplasms
o Injuries and Burns
o Poisoning an Adverse Effects of Drugs
o Complications of Surgery and Medical Care
 Test should be given at the completion of each section mentioned above
 Daily grades should not count for more than 10% of the course grade

 The final exam must have be comprehensive and count 20% of the course grade
Assessment Responsibilities: Instructors teaching this course will be expected to
participate in assessment activities as dictated by the division. You will be given
further information/instructions by the lead instructor during the term assessments
are to be completed.
