COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to help the inexperienced coder have a better understanding of
how to apply coding concepts when choosing an ICD-9-CM code. It will also provide a
“refresher” for the working coder. Coding Conventions, General Coding Guidelines, and
Chapter Specific Guidelines will be covered.
PREREQUISITES:
BUS 215 and BUS 216 (or concurrent enrollment in BUS 216) or consent of department
chair

List and Supply CMS Outpatient Guidelines in Coding Diagnosis
Identify and Properly use ICD-9-CM’s Coding Conventions
Accurately Code Diagnoses According to ICD-9-CM
Students will be able to use the Index in Volume 2 to find code categories.
Students will gain a working knowledge of ICD-9-CM coding conventions
(guidelines, format, signs and symbols)
7. Students will be trained to code to the highest level of specificity.
8. Students will know it is not appropriate to code directly from the Index
(Volume 2).
9. Students will have a working knowledge and ability to allow for correct selection
and assignment of appropriate diagnosis codes.
10. Students will have a working understanding of the supplementary ICD-9-CM
codes found in the “V” and “E” categories.

Student Success Center. Tutors may be obtained through the Student Success Center.

English Writing Center/Tutoring. For assistance with writing assignments in any college
course, students are encouraged to visit “The Write Place” in Room E109. English
instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at
the center.
Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from
classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after
midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award.
Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office.
Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly.
If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw
officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also
advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping.

A final exam will consist of comprehensive material from the semester. Each of these
tests, quizzes and the final exam will be weighted evenly to determine your final grade.
