Tentative Instructional Syllabus
I.
BASIC COURSE INFORMATION
A. Course Description:
Computer Information Systems (POFI1301. Computer Applications I). Overview of computer office applications
including current terminology and technology. Introduction to computer hardware, software applications, and
procedures. This course is designed to be repeated to improve student proficiency. Three lecture and one lab
hour each week. Lab fee.
B. Intended Audience:
This course is intended for the student who has a need for computer literacy. Any student not majoring in
Computer Information Systems, any classification may take this course. An emphasis on the application
integrated software packages.

II. INTENDED STUDENT OUTCOMES:
A. Core Objectives Required for this Course:
1. Critical Thinking: to include creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and analysis, evaluation
and synthesis of information
2. Communication: to include effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas
through written, oral and visual communication
3. Empirical and Quantitative Skills – to include the manipulation and analysis of numerical data or
observable facts resulting in informed conclusions
B.
Course Learning Outcomes for all Sections –
Identify the components of a computer system; and perform common tasks used in applications
1. Differentiate the uses of terminology used for the computer and to carry on a dialogue about the computer
and computing.
2. Differentiate between the computer’s functions, capabilities and limitations (Computer Literacy).
3. Demonstrate the skills required to use some of the most popular application software in solving various types
of applications.
III. ASSESSMENT MEASURES
A. Assessments for the Core Objectives
1. Critical Thinking – Competency in critical thinking will be assessed through the student's ability to work
through problems presented and project assignment throughout the course.
2. Communication Skills: The specific learning activity that will be utilized for official
assessment purposes will be a letter organizing a lecture series for client staff where
regional medical professionals are invited, as speaker, to discuss topics related to pediatric
health care. They are to utilizing their writing skills. The student’s performance of this
specific learning activity will be assessed through utilization of the AC Communication
value rubric.
3. Empirical and Quantitative Skills – because of the content learned which includes the
manipulation and analysis of numerical data or observable facts resulting in informed

conclusions the students must perform in order to master specific tasks for the course.
B. Assessments for Core Learning Outcomes
1. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the theory and techniques required for proper
solutions to the various applications taught.
2. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the human skills necessary for successful
development of oral communication skills through successful completion of pertinent
applications and presenting them to an end user.
3. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the basic tools solving specific applications
IV. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:
The course is taught using a combination of lectures and class discussions that complement
and supplement lecture material. Audio-visual materials, marker board illustrations, and
supervised in-class activities will be employed to enhance lecture presentations. Some
activities will require out-of-class assignments that require internet access, that will be
completed online.

Attendance –
1.
It is the responsibility of the student to attend each class, and arrange whatever time is necessary to
complete the course online during the available windows of time allotted. The instructor will keep a record
of attendance. The calendar is your guide as to when work must be completed and submitted.
2.
It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw officially in the College Admissions Office from a class the
student no longer desires to attend. The last day to Officially Drop/Withdraw with a “W” is April 7, 2014.

Additional Policies Established by the Individual Instructor –
1. As you are being trained to be a business professional and because professionalism and proper behavior are
expected in any business setting, the same behavior will be expected at all times as your personal integrity is on
display as you work through this class.
2. College instructional standards allow the instructor to set the educational objectives and requirements for each
course.
3. It is expected that each student will complete work as scheduled.
4. Learning Exercises (Exams) will be given on scheduled dates and times as the window of opportunity to
participate is available. A student is not expected to miss a scheduled Exercise.
5. If a student misses a scheduled, Major Learning Exercise (Exam), the Final Learning Exercise (Exam) will count
twice for one Learning Exercise (Exam) ONLY, as that grade and the final. No exceptions. Make sure you note
the Syllabus, Page 3, and mark your calendar of significant dates to remember. These Learning Exercises
(Exams) will be given on the dates scheduled.
6. The Project(s) have been assigned with due dates and must be submitted on those dates
7. Cheating in any form will result in an “F” in this course. In a course such as this, your integrity is a must.
8. Electronic devices are not allowed in the classroom. Cellular phones, Smart Phones (any brand), pagers, CD
players, radios, and similar devices are prohibited in the classroom and laboratory facilities.
9. Veterans - You must comply with your specific attendance requirements in addition to the attendance
requirements specified in this syllabus.
10. There’s really no excuse for tardiness as being tardy is inconsiderate to the instructor as well as to the fellow
classmates.
11. If you feel that you need a tutor, contact the Student Services Office. Also, if you as a student have special
learning needs which should be accommodated by Angelina College, please contact the Student
Services Office.
