Instructional Focus Things we might do in a typical IF class period: We are able to conduct group lessons to enrich or remediate instruction. Team building activities as rewards. Working on homework assignments so that students can get help from teachers before they go home for the day. Students can complete make-up assignments. Language Arts Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) Writing Writing Process; Genres--Narrative, Persuasive, Expository, Response to Literature, Technical; Vocabulary Development Grammar Parts of Speech, Parts of the Sentence, Sentence Structure, Phrases, Clauses, Mechanics, Usage Reading and Literature Independent reading- Scholastic Scope magazine; Novels: The Hobbit & The Outsiders; Other selected pieces GRADING Grading is done on a percent system. Percentages are assigned according to the guidelines below. Assessments 50% Practice 35% Exam 15% **Please check Infinite Campus often.** Late assignments will be penalized 10% of the earned grade for each day it is late. Late work will not be accepted after 3 days. Due to the nature of some assignments, late work may not be accepted. NOTEBOOK ORGANIZATION Set up 5 dividers for language arts and label them as follows: Mentor Sentences Writing Reading and Literature G/M/V (Grammar/Mechanics/Vocabulary) Keepers LITERACY DAYS The students have the opportunity to choose an activity to complete. The choices are writing, recitation, drama, or a design-your-own. This will be completed mostly during IF. USA TEST PREP The students have been assigned four benchmark tests. They have four weeks to get 200 points. If a student makes a 100 on the first two tests, then he or she gets a 100 and does not take the next two tests. MATH Things we might do in a typical class period: Warm-up—EXTREMELY important part of our lesson. We use this time to review important content, identify any possible issues/misconceptions, and preview new material. Homework is issued on USA Test Prep or through Edmodo. Lesson—includes notes and guided practice so the students will have something to look over for help Practice Time: Students will have the option of partner practice or independent practice when a new concept is introduced. I never give an assignment for a grade until we have had sufficient time to practice without penalty. Closing—wrap-up on the lesson before dismissing. When students need help in MATH, here are some options: Your notebook is your textbook. It is imperative that students keep notebooks organized in order to use it as a resource for help at home. Science Research Project • All students will conduct a science experiment. – 4 pre-approved topics will be offered to choose from for those choosing to NOT compete in the school Science Fair. • Those who wish to compete in Science Fair may do so with the assistance of Mrs. Lay – These students will work with Mrs. Laning to find a topic.
