Working Papers (corresponds with textbook). Students will have the option to keep the workbook in the classroom and tear out assignments/problems as needed. Students may also tear out pages for each chapter as a new chapter is started. Study Guide and Recycling Problem Workbook. These are workbooks that are used only 1 or 2 class periods each chapter. Seating Chart: Students should sit in their assigned seats; seating charts will be changed at teacher discretion. Students should have any assignments due for that day ready to be turned in at the beginning of class. The instructor will generally use before- or beginning-of-class time to distribute graded assignments. Those assignments should be kept in the student’s folder/binder and should not be given to other students who may not have that assignment completed. Classroom Management: Students will need to be attentive in class and ready to answer questions when called upon. Asking questions of the teacher or classmates are encouraged; discussion with classmates should be limited to classroom topics. To leave the classroom, students must have their planner and sign out on the check out form according to school policy for hall passes. Assignments: Class Work: Students will be asked to complete some work in class as practice; students will be given minimal credit for these tasks. Homework: Students will occasionally be given homework assignments; to know accounting is to do accounting. It will be the teacher’s goal to give some time (a minimum of five minutes—but often much more than five minutes) to allow students to begin this homework so questions and clarifications can be made prior to students completing it individually. Students should use their planner to write down assignments. Students need to individually determine the time outside of class needed to achieve the success they strive for. If students are absent: Students should inform Mrs. Wolken at the beginning of class their return after any absence. Mrs. Wolken will inform them of missing assignments. Students can also check Mrs. Wolken’s web site. Students will need to make up missed quizzes and tests outside of class (unless class time permits). It is the student’s responsibility to schedule those critical assessment pieces at the earliest convenience of student and teacher. Because accounting professionals are confronted with daily deadlines and schedules, accounting students will also be encouraged to take on that professional attitude when dealing with homework/project deadlines. o The ultimate goal of accounting students should be to learn the material at a level that will prepare them for the next accounting instruction, whether it is the next chapter or the next high school accounting course or the next accounting course(s) in college. o With that goal in mind, students are encouraged to complete ALL assignments and turn them in as directed. o However, late assignments will be accepted upon the specific guidelines of the instructor for major grading deadlines. (Specifically, this will mean that students can complete late work up to the end of each quarter for the assignments given during that quarter.) o Some variance to this policy may be considered for unusual circumstances. Extra Credit: Some extra credit assignments may be given at regular intervals and will be optional for students to complete. The approximate point value of these extra credit assignments will be announced at the time the assignment is given. Exact weights will be determined by the amount of time students devote to these areas of assessment, i.e. some grading terms will not have any required reinforcement activities or simulations; others may have several of these activities. Homework grades will be based on the number of points assigned to each homework assignment. Typically, the more difficult and time-consuming assignments are worth more points. Semester tests will be given according to school’s semester test schedule and will be categorized as a test—see above weights. Chapter tests will generally be worth 100 points each; semester tests will be worth approximately 200 points each. Chapter Tests: If a student is dissatisfied with his/her chapter test grade, he/she will have the option to retest. Retests must be completed on the student’s own time and should be completed within two to three days of receiving the graded test from the instructor. (Retests are not identical to the original tests but, with few exceptions, cover the same content as the original test.) With few exceptions, students can still earn a 100% on this retest. Reinforcement Activities are generally an opportunity for students to complete material that that has been covered over several chapters; most projects will be done individually. In many cases, students will be able to utilize the text and other resources but will need to complete the projects without asking questions of classmates. Additional Help: Accounting is a class that students need to stay current with. If a student falls behind, Mrs. Wolken would be very willing to provide additional help. Before school, Second Lunch, Periods 3 & 5 (first semester), or after school are often options for Mrs. Wolken. Students are also encouraged to just stop by Room 286B or possibly Room 206 for extra help or questions. Because Mrs. Wolken is occasionally out of the building for business visits, etc., students are encouraged to schedule “help” sessions in advance. Mrs. Wolken would also be willing to set up any tutor sessions if students want to get together for some extra help or reinforcement. Be sure to ask questions or let Mrs. Wolken know of any concerns.
