PRIMARY FUNCTION Work as a member of Carmel Unified School District’s Technology and Data Services Department to maintain, improve, and refine district’s network, computer, email, and IP telephony systems. Performs complex network and systems troubleshooting for system hardware, routers, LAN switching configurations, remote and wireless access, and network security. Work closely with vendors, technical and administrative personnel acting as technical lead in IT related projects including evaluating, testing and recommending new technologies and technology related procedures and policies. Work with site leaders to design, develop, and maintain the expanding wide area network and local area networks and computer systems. Stay abreast of developments in the field and be adaptive to meet the growing needs of information technology in the educational environment in areas such as data systems, internet, voice, video, and multimedia. B. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Duties may include, but not be limited to: 1. Maintain, improve, and refine usage of local area networks, wide area network and computer systems. a. Monitor network traffic and usage to insure security and optimize the flow of data through the network. Troubleshoot networks for local and wide area connectivity, utilization tracking, and node and router configuration. Anticipate bandwidth requirements. b. Identify and define potential and/or existing technological problems; develop and recommend solutions. c. Install and configure networking equipment, including, but not limited to, servers, routers, switches, hubs, and cabling. d. Document network design and server file structure. 2. 3. 4. 5. e. Coordinate repair and maintenance of systems; procure repair services of district instructional and administrative computer and network hardware. Assist in setting district hardware and software standards. a. Recommend specifications for computer and network hardware and software purchases. b. Review purchase requisitions involving technology. Establish and monitor effectiveness of security and backup procedures. a. Plan, test, implement and document ongoing backup and disaster recovery procedures. b. Plan and implement adequate up-to-date virus and intrusion protection. c. Act as security officer for the District’s network. Set up user accounts and privileges; change passwords as needed. Prevent unauthorized access. Provide Tier II technical support to site technicians. Assist in resolving computer desktop and network troubleshooting issues. Coordinate with Internet Service Provider. Assist District and site administrators and managers in planning instructional and administrative uses of technology. Represent the District at county, state and federal agency meetings pertaining to assigned duties. Manage District’s Voice over IP, voicemail and email services. Install, maintain and insure reliability of file and database servers, including SQL servers. Assist in development of virtual and cloud –based services. Supervise the work; operation and scheduling of itinerant Computer Technical Assistants. Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience. Microsoft System Engineer and Cisco Network Associate certified preferred. Experience building and maintaining multi-protocol internets using Cisco and other products. Solid understanding of networking theory including specific knowledge of TCP/IP and other protocols over Ethernet, 100 base FX, 100 base TX, 10 base T, and the fundamentals of T1 circuits. Experience with point-to-point circuits, modems, and asynchronous lines; ability to order and troubleshoot these connections in conjunction with circuit providers. Experience with Frame Relay, CSME, and ATM connectivity desired. Proficiency in Windows and Macintosh operating systems. Knowledge of Linux desired. Working knowledge of DNS and other TCP/IP implementations/applications in Windows. In-depth knowledge of Active Directory, Group Policy and LDAP desired. Working knowledge in network security monitoring tools, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and security policy management as implemented on Cisco and Hewlett Packard routers and other networking products. Working knowledge of enterprise-level wireless networks. Understanding of Microsoft Access and SQL databases used for student information, human resources, assessment, facilities maintenance, transportation, business services, food services, and other district functions. Excellent organizational and communication skills, including English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties. Possession of a valid driver’s license and automobile. WORKING CONDITIONS Office working environment subject to sitting at a desk for long periods of time, reaching in all directions and working at a computer and/or telephone for prolonged periods of time. Requires occasional work on weekends and at night in order to do emergency work and to complete regular maintenance and upgrades while the network is not in use.
