TROY UNIVERSITY MASTER SYLLABUS SORRELL COLLEGE OF BUSINESS BUS 5501 Survey of Business Concepts Prerequisites Admission into the MSM or MSHRM program. Description An overview course of the business management field including the functional areas of economics, marketing, quantitative methods, human relations and human resource management. Students must earn a grade of “B” or better in the course. Objectives On completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. Compare and contrast the major functional areas of business, including management, marketing, information systems, economics and legal environment. 2. List and describe the major branches of management, including operations management, human-resource management, and management science. 3. Apply basic quantitative and statistical methodology to management decisions. 4. Apply the concepts of supply and demand and competitive advantage to business scenarios. Apply fundamental concepts of law, ethics, and social responsibility to business problems. 5. Describe the internal and external environments of business, including an evaluation of company strengths, weaknesses and opportunities. 6. Identify mission statements, strategic objectives, and organization-level strategies. 7. Demonstrate written communication skills appropriate to the profession of business. 8. Apply basic management, marketing, economics and information strategies to business objectives in an apt scenario. Purpose To provide a survey of concepts needed in the MSM or MSHRM degree programs relating to the entire field of business management. This course is required for students entering the MSM or the MSHRM program that do not hold a business undergraduate degree earned in the last eight years awarded by a school that holds ACBSP or AACSB accreditation for its business programs. This Master Syllabus must be used as the basis for developing the instructor syllabus for this course, which must also comply with the content specifications outlined in the Troy University Faculty Handbook.
