Description Conceptual and practical foundations of information systems to include support of management and decision-making functions, computer system project management, economic and legal considerations of management information systems, and system implementation/evaluation. Objectives On completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. Describe the major types of information systems, the defining characteristics of each, as well as how each is used in an organizational context. 2. Identify the major legal, ethical, moral, societal, and security related issues with regard to the use of technology and the management of information. 3. Identify the major hardware and software components of an information system. 4. Identify common activities and issues related to the development and implementation of IS solutions to include design, development, testing, and production processes. 5. Identify the major hardware and software components used in communication systems, as well as how those systems are used in a business environment. 6. Recognize, analyze, and resolve IS security issues, especially how they relate to management policy and guideline creating. 7. Apply IS strategies to business objectives in an apt scenario. Purpose To provide familiarity with a framework for understanding and managing information systems in organizations, emphasizing what they are, how they affect an organization and its employees, and how they can enhance business efficiency, effectiveness, and competitiveness.
