MSM 6630
Management Information Systems for Leaders
Prerequisites
Graduate standing. Admission into the MSM degree program.
Description
Conceptual and practical foundations of information systems to include support of management
and decision-making functions, computer system project management, economic and legal
considerations of management information systems, and system implementation/evaluation.
Objectives
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Describe the major types of information systems, the defining characteristics of each, as
well as how each is used in an organizational context.
2. Identify the major legal, ethical, moral, societal, and security related issues with regard to
the use of technology and the management of information.
3. Identify the major hardware and software components of an information system.
4. Identify common activities and issues related to the development and implementation of
IS solutions to include design, development, testing, and production processes.
5. Identify the major hardware and software components used in communication systems, as
well as how those systems are used in a business environment.
6. Recognize, analyze, and resolve IS security issues, especially how they relate to
management policy and guideline creating.
7. Apply IS strategies to business objectives in an apt scenario.
Purpose
To provide familiarity with a framework for understanding and managing information systems in
organizations, emphasizing what they are, how they affect an organization and its employees,
and how they can enhance business efficiency, effectiveness, and competitiveness. MSM
Leadership concentration required course.
Master Syllabi are developed by the senior faculty in each business discipline. This Master Syllabus must be used as the basis for developing the
instructor syllabus for this course, which must also comply with the content specifications outlined in the Troy University Faculty Handbook.
The objectives included on this Master Syllabus must be included among the objectives on the instructor’s syllabus, which may expand upon the
same as the instructor sees fit. The statement of purpose seeks to position the course properly within the curriculum and should be consulted by
faculty as a source of advisement guidance. Specific choice of text and other details are further subject to Program Coordinator guidance.
