INTRODUCTION TO MARKETING SYLLABUS
I.

Course Duration: One year
Credits per year: 1
Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Business
Fees: $20.00 class fee
II.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This full year course is designed as an introductory to Advanced Marketing. The class covers all
the basic concepts involved in understanding sales, customer service, and/or first-line supervisory
positions in wholesale, retail, and service establishments. A student completing this course will
possess the technical knowledge and skills associated with sales, marketing, promotion and related
activities, for broad categories of products and services. The student will come to understand the
business environment, identify market potential of products and services, identify customer wants
and needs, successfully targeting the customer population, advertising and promoting to the
customer population, personal selling and basic record keeping. In addition the student will
receive skills in life management and economic leadership skills required of employees in sales
and marketing occupations. This course will be taught using lecture, discussion, team projects,
and case study methods in a technological environment. A DECA chapter providing current and
practical application for the student’s future success in sales and marketing will also be provided.
III.
Objectives
1. Students will explore careers in sales and marketing preparing them for the school-to-work
transition.
2. Students will devote time and interest to a school vocational chapter of DECA.
3. Students will use computer technology to complete some assignments.
4. Ethics will be integrated and discussed during class.
5. Global marketing and multicultural awareness will be integrated into lesson.
6. Students will learn to work cooperatively.
7. Students will use critical thinking skills on projects.
8. Students will apply learned skills though class assignments and DECA participation.
9. Entrepreneurship skills will be taught and assessed throughout the class.
IV.
Outcomes
1. Students will understand marketing functions and foundations and how they relate to one
another.
2. Students will gain an understanding as to how economics, human resources and marketing &
business foundations relate to one another.
3. Students will experience situations in selling, promotion, distribution, risk management,
pricing, purchasing, marketing information management, product/service planning and
financing.
4. Students will be prepared for future study of marketing in higher education.
5. Students will be prepared to participate in DECA competitions for academic achievement
awards and scholarships.
Grading:
General Marketing is a Junior/Senior, full year class, offering one full credit upon successful
completion of all course requirements. Grading will as follows:
