September 2015 | siemens.co.uk/traffic Streets Ahead The magazine of Siemens Mobility, Traffic Solutions Driving enforcement forward Page 3 New products at JCT Page 4 Foreword It’s been a particularly busy time at Siemens since the last edition of Streets Ahead, published at Traffex in April, with the company seeing growth and development across the business. Our investment in innovative traffic management service, systems and solutions continues, most notably the creation in Poole of our new Service Operations Centre and the steady delivery of new products including Sapphire and numerous Stratos modules. The acquisition of Zenco Systems (see opposite) made the news in July and most recently we opened a brand new service depot in London (see below). An update on product developments including Stratos and Siemens Sapphire, a complete Journey Time Measurement System for traffic monitoring using Bluetooth® technology, feature on page 4 with recent successes in Scotland highlighted on page 5. We look forward to seeing you at JCT and discussing these developments and sharing with you our vision and thoughts to help you address your daily traffic management challenges. James Daniels from our Consultancy Services team will be giving a presentation on bus priority, reviewing various projects recently completed at locations across the UK. Product Marketing Manager Pri Boyd will also present a paper, asking whether co-operative systems can deliver Energy Efficient Intersections: (see page 7), reflecting on the real-life results of our pilot system, deployed with the support of Newcastle City Council and Newcastle University. Finally, we look forward to welcoming customers to this year’s Siemens User Group meetings on Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 October 2015 at the Norton Park Hotel, near Winchester, Hampshire SO21 3NB. Once again we have a full and varied agenda, feature ‘Special Interest Sessions’ and plenty of best practice sharing and networking opportunities. If you have not already booked your place please see the link on our website. For each Local Authority attending, Siemens will cover the cost of one person’s B&B for the Tuesday night. The User Group is now CPD certified. Matthew Vincent, Deputy Sales and Marketing Director matthew.vincent@siemens.com Siemens Director Mick Murphy, Dana Skelley and Gordon Wakeford, Head of Siemens’ Mobility Division. New depot opens in London Our brand new depot in Enfield opened on July 29th. This is the newest of our 20 depot facilities around the country and represents a strategic move by the company to manage all London activities from one location. The TfL Traffic Control Maintenance Services contracts and the new Detection and Enforcement Infrastructure (D&EI) contract will be run from this new facility. This major investment - in a new facility and employees - demonstrates our long-term commitment to a valued customer and will enable a 2 Streets Ahead September 2015 team of dedicated technicians and customer support engineers to meet all operational requirements across London, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Around 40 new positions have been created in London including 34 based in Enfield. Opening the new regional depot, Dana Skelley, Director of Asset Management at TfL, said: ‘We look forward to further strengthening our relationship with Siemens to improve and innovate traffic technology across michael.e.murphy@siemens.com London and keep motorists, cyclists and pedestrians safe and on the move.’ The new Enfield Traffic Depot accommodates over thirty management and support staff and a team of around 50 field staff. It also includes training facilities for Siemens and TfL staff, testing facilities for traffic signals and ANPR equipment, a full warehouse operation for the local stocking of traffic equipment and spares enabling a swift response to all TfL requirements across London. Driving enforcement forward In July, we announced the acquisition of Zenco Systems, the UK’s leading traffic enforcement organisation. Thinking ahead is essential for us to maintain our market leading position in intelligent traffic systems and the acquisition underlines our commitment to a growing traffic enforcement market and complements our global portfolio. Enforcement improves safety, traffic flow and air quality in our evergrowing urban areas and enables revenues for our customers to be reinvested in transport infrastructure. Gordon Wakeford, Head of Siemens’ Mobility Division, said: ‘We are excited to be able to build upon our proven range of traffic technology solutions, and aim to expand Zenco’s proven civil enforcement technology through our existing worldwide operations. With their strong reputation for developing state-of-the-art solutions, I’m delighted to welcome the employees from Zenco into Siemens.’ All Zenco Systems employees will join Siemens, with Zenco’s existing Rugby premises remaining in operation. Zenco Systems was founded in 2006 to help local authorities realise the potential of using CCTV video evidence to enforce traffic contraventions. Following the first digital enforcement trials in the London Borough of Camden in 1996, the ZenGrab Digital Enforcement Solution has since become the most widely used and efficient digital enforcement system in the UK. From simple parking and bus lane enforcement to more complex moving traffic contraventions such as banned turns and blocking yellow box junctions, Zenco’s complete range of unattended enforcement cameras use state-of-the-art technology to provide traffic authorities with cost effective, redeployable enforcement solutions. adrian.ford@siemens.com Manchester City Council uses a Zenco bus lane enforcement system. Designed to enable the Council to identify unauthorised vehicles using the lanes restricted for the unhindered flow of buses, the system captures the event and prepares an evidential record to support the issue of an enforcement penalty charge notice. September 2015 Streets Ahead 3 New products on show at JCT Success in Scotland From the Highlands to the Scottish Borders, Siemens is busy north of the border. In addition to winning a major new traffic signals maintenance contract in Glasgow, the company continues to install and maintain Electric Vehicle (EV) charge points for more and more Scottish businesses. Since unveiling a number of new products and concepts at Traffex 2015 including the talking controller, the new Stratos Outstation, a new wireless cycle detection system and Pedestrian Countdown at Traffic Signals (PCaTS), the product management team has been busy with the ongoing development of our portfolio. Siemens Sapphire Long term service Using Bluetooth® technology, Siemens Sapphire provides a complete Journey Time Measurement System (JTMS) for traffic monitoring. The system is fully integrated into Stratos, Siemens hosted traffic management system, providing the necessary tools for analysis and monitoring of journey times. Under a joint contract commencing August 2015 for a period of up to five years, Siemens will continue to maintain roadside traffic control and information equipment for both Glasgow City Council and West Dunbartonshire Council. The new contract includes the provision of associated ancillary support services, as well as the supply of works and services to support the Councils’ traffic control operation and periodical planned signal and optical maintenance. Stratos Emerge The JTMS detectors are compact and simple to install, minimising street clutter. Designed with an extended detection range of up to 100m for traffic environments, the detectors transmit requests and listen for device responses, gathering the necessary (anonymous) data to measure journey times between two defined areas. Launching at JCT and designed using the latest web technologies with versions tailored for both desktop and mobile devices, Stratos Emerge allows local authorities to quickly and easily configure and automatically publish traffic network information to the public. Stratos Emerge helps to keep the public informed with up to date information on Car Parks, Message Signs, Collisions, Incidents, Roadworks and Events. Additional information about the local area including train stations, ports, airports and tourist information points of interest can be added to the map with photographs and links to external websites. Real-time journey time monitoring is an essential element of any traffic management system and an invaluable tool for the traffic manager to ensure optimal network operation. The Bluetooth® detectors are integrated to the Stratos Journey Time Monitoring module, with links to ANPR cameras and third-party systems. All inputs contribute to a rich source of information for analysis and monitoring of traffic. With user-friendly overview dashboards and maps, Stratos shows current journey times and highlights routes that are operating outside their norms using input data from various sources, including the Bluetooth JTMS detectors. gary.cox@siemens.com With equipment at over 500 traffic signal intersections and more than 400 pedestrian crossing facilities, as well as numerous variable message signs and below ground detection sites, the contract represents one of the largest of its kind. dick.scott@siemens.com EV funding Meanwhile, through the ChargePlace Scotland project, 100% grant funding is available to Scottish-based businesses for the installation of EV charge points for workplaces. Siemens has been selected as one of the framework suppliers. The aim of the funding is to complement the national network of charge points being installed across Scotland to promote electric vehicle use. ‘We are very proud to have been selected for this scheme,’ says Head of Electromobility, Mark BonnorMoris. ‘Workplace EV charging is key to continuing the increase uptake of Electric Vehicles across Scotland. We offer host sites a very high level of service through Siemens locally employed engineers and service depots across Scotland – this ensures EV drivers can be confident that our equipment will always be available for charging.’ All Scottish-based businesses meeting the appropriate criteria can apply to the scheme which is managed by the Energy Saving Trust - once approved they can select Siemens as one of three approved suppliers. www.energysavingtrust.org.uk mark.bonnormoris@siemens.com priscilla.boyd@siemens.com Upgraded by Siemens earlier this year, Anniesland Cross in Glasgow is the second largest urban intersection in Europe. 4 Streets Ahead September 2015 September 2015 Streets Ahead 5 Work started last month replacing older bulbs with new energy-efficient LED lights in traffic equipment across Leicester as part of a £1million modernisation programme. With 35% already installed, traffic and pedestrian crossing signals are being fitted with LED lights at 129 sites across the city in a five-month programme. In all, 1,200 push button units will be replaced, along with nearly 6,000 traffic light heads at 46 junctions and 83 pedestrian crossings, along with 650 pedestrian crossing ‘green man’ units. frank.steinheimer@siemens.com Leicester retrofit scheme underway New motorway junction unveiled Left to right: Mick Murphy, Steve Mitchell and Ian Donaldson (all Siemens) pictured with Mayor of Barnsley Councillor Brian Mathers Siemens installation operative Ben Warrington (left) pictured with assistant mayor Adam Clarke. Presentations at JCT Bus Priority in practice Barnsley Council officially opened the M1 Junction 37 signalisation works with a plaque unveiling this month. Based on designs supplied by our Consultancy Services, the roundabout at the junction of the motorway and the A628 Barnsley to Manchester road has been upgraded from the existing priority controlled roundabout to a fully signalised system operating MOVA, SCOOT and UTC automatic strategies. Signalising the junction will control the heavy traffic flows which previously lead to congestion and delay. It will also ensure that motorway slip lane queues are controlled and will provide better access to the nearby Capitol Park business units. The plaque unveiling was carried out by Mayor of Barnsley Cllr Brian Mathers, Council Leader Cllr Sir Stephen Houghton CBE and Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, Cllr Roy Miller. ‘This scheme has provided a high quality, efficient transport system which addresses areas of congestion and helps reduce time lost by businesses and the travelling public, as well as making the borough attractive to businesses looking for employment land,’ said Cllr Miller. At JCT, Thursday 17 September, at 11am, James Daniels from our Consultancy Services team will be reviewing a number of recent bus priority projects completed at various locations across the UK. These have all called upon different technologies and different methods of implementation that impact on operation in different ways. Integration with MOVA and SCOOT as well as equipment and communications methods are all considered in James’ presentation. james.daniels@siemens.com Energy Efficient Intersections: Can co-operative approaches deliver measurable benefits? Later, starting at 2pm (session 3), Product Marketing Manager Pri Boyd outlines our involvement in a European-funded project in Newcastle to test new technology that communicates between traffic signals and motorist using infrastructure to vehicle (I2V) communications. priscilla.boyd@siemens.com Joe joins product sales team We’re pleased to welcome Joe Moxham to the product sales team with responsibility for our enforcement and VMS products. ‘It is a technically demanding sector but one which ultimately has a rewarding direct impact on the safety and efficiency of our roads’ said Joe.
